http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Trilogy

There are 3 Japanese movies that tell the story of Musashi Miyamoto. Toshiro Mifune plays the famous samurai.

The three films are:

    * Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954)
    * Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955)
    * Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island (1956)

I saw all three at one sitting once (in an old theater in Berkeley) - after 6 or 7 hours of hearing Japanese and seeing the subtitles, it felt like I spoke Japanese...

Musashi invented a two-sword style that was at odds with the classical swordsmen (he was largely self taught) - but winning 60 duels (to the death) shows how effective his style was (plus, he was strong as hell and fast as lightning). Every sport, every era, has a 'greatest', and Musashi was his era's greatest swordsman.

Plus he wrote books :-)
