Jim, I wasn’t speaking about classic rock stations (which are fine by my son, but not me.) I mean then. “Aqualung” and “Thick” were huge, though I don’t have sales figures.

Of course, maybe I just thought they were because, while I respected Jethro Tull, I found the band overbearing (as opposed to say crushing like King Crimson or dominating like maybe the Who).

I’m glad to see Ian Anderson returned to music after setting up his fish-farming business though.

“Memory Almost Full” is a terrific album by Macca. If it takes a coffee shop to sell Macca, so be it. Tells us about the state of the music industry when GP can’t get a major label deal and Sir Paul is reduced to hawking his albums in coffee shops – on a label the coffee shop company owns.

He’s Sir Paul and can do whatever the #@#$# he likes (how’s that, Elaine?). I’m his buddy to the end….

Russ, I don’t think Ian Anderson was being disingenuous. If you were hearing lots of Tull, must’ve been on classic rock stations where they played stuff from “Aqualung” and “Living in the Past” incessantly. You’ve got to remember, too, that Ian may have been thinking about the 70’s when LZ, Kiss, and the other arena rockers were selling boatloads compared to him (except for “Aqualung” and “Thick.”) He may have overstated a bit in using the term “cult” for JT, but he’d probably heard that from his record label’s marketing guys many times….

There’s a special place in the pantheon for artists who can sustain that high level for an entire career. Parker, Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel – and on a music board I’m a member of somebody added Tom Waits to the list – these are just special people. Once upon a time I had Bowie on the list, but it’s been awhile since he did anything I thought was really vital.

And this is the point where Jim jumps in with Macca….

Pat: Thanks. When I do interviews, I always look to ask a lot of questions they probably haven’t encountered before. That isn’t always easy, but it can pay off. The soccer answer here is worth the price of admission, I think. And even when you have a question kind of wrong, as I do on the Sam Cooke Q, it can go some great places.

We need to do more of these….
