never watched an episode. what ultimate good does it do society to voyeuristically "tour" thru the ugly wreckage that is our culture? does it serve as a clarion call, warning to turn back from ruin? does it inspire individuals to try against overwhelming odds to persevere, endure and hope for a chance to make a better future? or are you just watching the modern day equivalent "cage match" at the Coliseum?

There is no need to resort to name calling, poor frank just doesn't get it.

I don't mean this as an insult but The Wire is not some light hearted show that you can just vegetate in front of. It requires the viewer to be able to think, possibly one additional reason that so much of the United States doesn't get it.

Sad, but not surprising as the institutional rot that The Wire depicts so well is not quarantined in Baltimore.

Pure genius this show is.

Agreed. Someone finally agrees with me. Great show, the greatest.

Gritty, real, too true for comfort for eggheads or slouching toward babylon couch potatoes.

Frank,

Simply put, you are wrong, and your comment fails. :)

What an overrated show. I've tried getting into it several times because I'm a George Pelacanos fan -- he was one of the writers originally. The writing is terrible: all the swearing is laughable, not edgy. The show is cast with second-rate one-note actors. All in all, The Wire is simply sub-par.

"The Wire" is beginning its final season, and it's worth it to take a look at a show that has so brutally and honestly chronicled the failures of our system to address the real problems it faces....
