Thanks for your helpful comments, Raymond and Simon.

John, I'm not necessarily an Obama supporter. Plan to vote for Edwards in NY primary. Thanks for writing. Will visit your site now.

I won't speak for Russ, but this scum actually agrees that we need to increase the size of the military and thinks that mandatory national service is a very good idea that is WAY overdue.

There is no-one in the field of candidates right now who truly deserves my vote. Every single one of them has flaws that I consider nearly fatal to their candidacy. Yet ultimately I'll have to choose one, unless someone comes out of the woodwork - and the chance of that happening are about as high as me voting for Ron Paul (ie significantly less than 0%).

You guys bother to read what you're pushing?

Almost exactly as warmonger Kerry had done before (the pdf file may be produced from the same computer) Obama thinks he owns your kids, and they should be forced to perform service for the US federal government, even against their wills, apparently.

Warmonger Obama also wants to increase the military size 92,000 troops, somewhere in there, not on page one. He sees the need for more and more troops in a climate of more and more wars. I guess that makes sense, if you're comfortable with the wars part.

Empty, stuffed shirt, neo-fascist Obama ... leading us ... where exactly?

Gorbachev's "failure" with regard to perestroika illustrates the improbability of an individual alone enacting change. Gorbachev was a catalyst and "glasnost" the animating idea that enabled the Soviet people to begin the process of dealing with the past in order to move forward.

But we in the West failed both him and the Soviet people by crowing about defeating the "evil empire" when perhaps we should have been supporting the popular desire for change with real economic assistance and investment to ensure that systemic change translated to perceivably improved circumstances.

using gorbachev makes an interesting analogy, one that hadn't occurred to me.

what about the differences in the role of public opinion, though?

true, PO was becoming a greater factor during the thaw of the gorbachev era, but the stalinist bureaucracy was still in place.

PO in america, especially lately, since the meltdown from the iraq invasion and its sidelights -- abu ghraib, fallujah -- and the other, economic, drivers like universal health care, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the sinking economy, are things gorby didn't enjoy.

just some thoughts

We need Obama to take a leap of faith into a future with no nuclear weapons, their budgets freed up for social programs....
