I teach marketing. I do not give my zip code at retail. I hang up on telemarketers. I am the problem and the solution, as are you. We are taught at an early age to answer a question when asked. If you are a woman, you have an even stronger sense to play nice. It helps explain why I feel terrible every time I deny the innocent teen behind the register the simple pleasure of my zip code. It might also explain why I feel compelled to make eye contact with the poor soul at the mall earning minimum wage with a survey on a clipboard. So I comfort myself with the notion that I have some control over my privacy but I don’t. Neither do you. Unless of course you want to stop paying taxes, begin taking the bus and deny yourself the discounts at the grocery store. Yet, even in the face of these complex realities and our own cynicism, we remain stubborn, idealistic, hopeful (don’t tell anyone). I believe in the possibility of responsible marketers and yes, even responsible politicians. As this forum reminds us (gratefully), it is still legal to think, to teach, to act, to believe and to not accept that 20% off your next purchase in return for your credit history. I am a marketer. The Republicans, led by DeLay, gerrymandered districts using voter data to the point that there was at least on district that was 10 miles long by 10 feet wide just to get a single Republican-friendly home into a district.
