George Soros' real name is gyorgy schwartz, a Hungarian Jew pretending to be a Nazi and having a wonderful life in Budapest while my father , the same age suffered in various concentration camps before being liberated by George Pattons troops may 5th 1945. George Soros is a very very lucky man, However hedge funds are not cool, they are unregulated, so rather tha n being a philanthropist , he cuases suffering too.

I find most of this agreeable, especially the parts on change and how we should become aware of it happening, but, I would be cautious to use buddhist ideas as a justification for any kind of societal impetus.

Christians already have this problem in spades - hardliners say one must give all of one's money to the poor to be righteous, and they cite Scripture that justifies their view, while wealthy people believe that God has blessed them and made them "abundant." So Christians remain often unable to figure out what Christ meant when he said 'give to Caesar what is Caesar's etc"

For us, is Soros closer to Caesar or closer to God?

Sandra,
Soros is lucky because he's one of the hardest workers at what he does, in the world. He is willing to risk everyhing him on one trade, and is at the top of his game. Although I have profound differences with him personally, I respect him as the great speculator he is. As for never suffering a day in his life, where do you get that information. I can name at least 6 monster trades that he(and his funds) nearly got wiped out, and if that isn't suffering, then I don't know what is. As for being born rich, I don't know where you got that as his family was comfortable and educated, but certainly not rich.

George soros never suffered a day in his life , so all his energy could be spent making the really big bucks, buying really cheap and selling really low, and taking advantage of all opportunity. no budda he, unles you want to compare the fact that the budda was also born rich. George soros is a very very lucky man. He has the luxury to philosophise with his pen, just like i did when this used to be america.

Martin:

Successful trading is only about enlightenment and transcendence....plus a high degree of risk tolerance. Soros wrote an interesting book, that's for sure. I get a kick out of whatever he writes, but prefer the more practical writings of his old partner Victor Niederhoffer. You should check out his "Education of a Speculator" or "Practical Speculation" These books are far more than how to guides on speculating and markets and have excellent life lessons as well. He also has a goodweb site, Daily Speculations, which I've linked from my blog. Daily Speculations is sort of an S&R for the speculation crowd and the list of authors is like a Who's Who in the speculation field. Some pretty bright people over there, ever so modest, and the site embodies the spirit of Benjamin Franklin. Of course, like any site, there's a couple of flamers and trolls however it is one of the more civilized sites around.

The quest for perfect knowledge and the building of an open society...

What do George Soros and Buddhist bodhisattvas have in common? Both recognize that the only way to build a better society is to shed the biases that keep us from seeing the connections we have to each other....
