The strategy:

Iran is in the crosshairs for two main reasons, and several minor ones.

1) Most of Iran's gas and oil is in one province right next to Iraq. Originally, this was a tempting sight, that when the Iraq invasion went swimmingly, with candies and flowers, the victorious armies would be ready to help the oil rich Iranian province with their own freedom and liberation. This hasn't turned out so well for the grand-theft nation builders. So, they're considering scaling back down their ambitions a little.

2) Israel, and their sympathizers in DC, want Iran attacked primarily because Iran supports Hezbollah. Hezbollah is the main check on Israeli expansion into Lebanon and the seizure of the Litani River. Israel's defeat in 2006, in their barbaric war crime against Lebanon, only reaffirms their desire to see Iran taken out of the equation. Israel has way too much influence on US foreign poliicy in the region, and all US representatives must "kiss the ring," or face the zionist backlash in the media and in strategic campaign financing.

Minor reasons include the 1979 hostage situation that damaged Washington's reputation, and they have long memories against people who stand up to American hegemony.

The Iranian oil bourse is already damaging the US dollar, which is today at $108 per barrel of oil!

Hegemony allows no challengers. Perhaps that's more of a major reason. The nuclear hypocrisy strategy has been long thought out, ever since the NPT was shoved down the throats of the third world. The US never had any intention whatsoever of eliminating nuclear weapons. The notion is laughable on its face.

I long for a president who would make nuclear issues a priority. Actually, Clinton has some good ideas. But they're cancelled out by her war-like tendencies that could get us into a nuclear war.

Some laws are worse than nothing at all - witness the now-defunct anti-assault weapon ban. It was so specific in its definitions of what made a firearm an "assault" weapon that every gun maker was able to bypass its restrictions within a year of its passage. And so, while it existed, gun control advocates could use it to show they'd done something on gun control when they really hadn't. And that gave the public a false sense of security.

I'm beginning to wonder if the NPT has been so radically bypassed and ignored that it's about to, or already has, become worse than nothing at all. I don't know, but I do know that it's not strong enough as it stands today. But there's no way that the U.S. government under Bush II, or under at least two of the three main Presidential candidates, will ever let the NPT or a follow-on treaty be as strong as it needs to be.
