Condoleezza Rice: Never met a milestone she wasn't willing to render meaningless

ricemccain2.gifAt The Washington Note yesterday, the estimable Steve Clemons wrote “Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is speaking this morning to Grover Norquist’s weekly powerhouse gathering at Americans for Tax Reform of conservative associations, think tanks, and political operations.” What’s not business as usual about this?

It seems a major Republican operative told Clemons that it was an attempt to “secure her future in Republican politics and to position herself as a ‘potential’ VP candidate on the McCain ticket.”

Imagine if McCain chose her, they won, he became ill or died, and she was ushered into the White House. Congoleum Condie would not only trump Hillary as the first woman president but Obama as the first black president.

Just like when she was named national security advisor and secretary of state, her breakthrough would have absolutely no residual benefits for either her sex or her race.

  1. CondaChevron Rice meeting with operative Grover “election fraud” Norquist…..how choice is that. Condachevron…..she lied to congress with a straight face….so she’s a shoe in….a model for young women everywhere.

  2. Who besides me thinks that adding Condi to his ticket assures that McCain will be in thrall to the same cabals that control Dubya?

Not that he isn’t already, of course….

  3. Dr. Slammy,

She wasn’t playing her A game that day. I’m sure we’ve all had days like that, I know I have. I guess that she’s just human….like Hillary:)

  4. Both Condi and Hillary have had days where they didn’t bring their A-games. I often have a hard time assessing Rice, though. Sometimes I think she’s a fairly smart woman who’s trying to avoid getting Colin Powellized by a stupid administration. Other times I remind myself that she SAW Colin get Powellized by that administration and chose to take the job anyway.

In any case, if you have her job and you’re speaking on the record in that context, there’s really not much excusing “Soviet.”

  5. I’ve been guilty of major gaffes more than once in my life, and strongly suspect that everyone reading this blog has also. I’d be inclined to give her a pass, much like I’m giving Obama a pass on his affiliation with Wright. However, I’m not giving Obama a pass on his economic plan. I saw an interview with him on CNBC today and find his ideas to be very scary.

Here’s a transcript of his interview:

    Scary, indeed.

  6. I’d still choose McCain over Billerie and adding Condi into it would just make that more likely.

  7. Let’s refresh our memories about Rice’s appearance before the 9/11 Commission. . .

BEN-VENISTE: Isn’t it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6 PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB?

RICE: I believe the title was, “Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States.”

I’d never seen a government figure incriminate herself like this. She humiliated and shamed her very own self. She should go crawl in the hole they dragged Saddam Hussein out of and never come out.

  8. That’s the trouble with PDB’s. They get a couple hundred of them a week that cross their desk and it’s impossible to act on every one.
