My favorite coffee place on the planet is in State College PA. I reside in Denver, Colorado, and lack the money, time, or inclination to fly to central PA every time I want a great cup of coffee and a nice ambiance.

Brian,

I hate Starbucks, but ended up meeting there for business. Ever since my favorite coffee place closed, I'm at a loss.

I agree with you about the windfall profits tax.......they never work. I don't have a problem with taxes, and believe in paying my fair share. I do have a problem with excessive taxes, and progressive tax rates.

You drink Starbucks, Jeff? Man, my respect for you just dropped a notch.... ;)

I'm all for pricing carbon emissions in some way (I used to be a carbon tax supporter, but now I'm more agnostic on the issue), but I'm not a fan of windfall profits taxes. Not because I have any moral or ethical complaint about taxes, but rather because windfall profit taxes have been tried in the past and have never worked.

I'm less concerned about the price of gas than I am of a cup of coffee at Starbucks. I paid over $2.00 for a 16 0z cup of coffee the other day. Since coffee is mostly water, I think I'm getting ripped off as the coffee costs much more than a gallon of gas. There is no shortage of coffee beans, and next year's coffee bean crop looks like it will be a bumper crop. The evil speculators haven't caused a huge run up in coffee prices, so it must be a case of corporate greed and windfall profits. There should be congressional hearings into the evil cabal that is known as Starbucks:)

I can understand the cutbacks in business travel. But until the top honchos at big corporations begin selling off the corporate jets, I'll take the cutbacks with a grain of salt.

I've recently heard stories about changing driving habits from some quarters least expected; the reasons may not be the best ones, but the results are equivalent. Unfortunately, we can change our driving habits easier than all the other habits affected by oil prices. We still need to eat and clothe ourselves; the hard choices/changes are just getting here.

Here's an idea for alleviating the disproportionate burden on the poor from mending our wasteful ways. Take a large sum of money and dedicate it to improving the energy efficiency of homes, businesses, and public buildings. Use the money and the effort to employ the "poor". Any fool can run a cellulose insulation blower; the working class has long manufactured/constructed technological marvels that they can't explain scientifically. We need real industry (i.e. with real value added) and we have a tremendous opening for fostering a new industrial landscape.

Wise men from Hindu Brahmins to George Clinton have recognized that every ending is a new beginning; if we refuse or fail to turn our greatest liability into our greatest asset then we have no one to blame but ourselves.
