One of the things I liked so much about the book is that it didn't come across with a particular political slant. Usually, the neocons can't resist packing that kind of undertone to their work (if not just making it outright explicit). I thought Kagan kept it pretty straight.

Americans can't believe people elsewhere would prefer autocracy or theocracy over democracy. But essentially that's what we're doing over here by allowing Bush et al exert the "unitary" executive theory over us. And by allowing fundamental Christianity access to the halls of power, in the military as well.

Meanwhile, I'd be cautious of heeding a Kagan. Along with brother Frederick and father Donald, they're notorious neocons. PNAC and all that.

I suspect that, if historians investigated the "inevitable" changes that have occurred over the course of present and future history, they'd find every one of them happened because of a massive amount of human effort.

Human inertia takes a force to overcome just as surely as physical inertia does.
