Bono recieved regular death threats in the US for singing “Pride”. The FBI took those threats very seriously. At one point kidnapping threats very so serious that all the band was asked to have all their fingers and toes printed. U2 rarely talks about these threats but they have been pretty constant throughout their career since “War”.

Unless the story was a fabrication, the IRA threatened Bono back in their earlier days because he was so vocally anti-violence.

Still, there’s little doubt that Clegg has put himself squarely in the way of more danger than just about any artist alive (and no, I’m not counting rapper conflict, which is largely self-inflicted).

Bono’s “put his life on the line”? We could definitely have a long discussion about that

However, Clegg had a tour in South Africa that they (internally) named the Bullets for Bafaza tour, after their tour-bus driver. He is a local chief and had become embroiled in a local war. A group of gangsters was following after them to assassinate them.

They didn’t stop the tour, but tried to keep a few towns ahead while they negotiated terms with the various factions. Now THAT is putting your life on the line.

Thanks for a fantastic piece on Clegg, who is and has been tragically overlooked as an artist. For Americans who don't know his music, think of Paul Simon's Graceland, only about 100 times better. I'm not kidding. Find a copy of Shadow Man if you don't believe me. Clegg put on two of the three greatest concerts I've ever seen. The third was U2's ZooTV tour. And yeah, I think you're too hard on Bono - he may lack policy depth, but he's put his life on the line to speak truth about cultures in crisis, just like Clegg. But that's another argument for another day. Can't wait for the CD to arrive. Meanwhile, you've got me reflecting on something I wrote about Clegg myself, all the way back in 1989.
