Fixation on the flag is nostalgia for an America we once felt patriotic towards. I don’t believe most Americans identify with their country anymore. The latest wave of immigrants — Hispanic, Indian, other Asians — make us feel this country isn’t ours anymore.

Umm … so you are telling me that you are 100% American. No Polish, German, Italian, etc … in your blood. Do you think 10 years ago – it was ONLY Americans in this country? Maybe 20 yrs ago? How about 50? We are a country of every nationality, every race. Always have been. The only true American is the American Indian. They are the ones that have reason to complain about the way the country has become.

And saying that you or all Americans will not stand up for the flag is saying that you think the blood spilled over the last 100 years was in vain. Be mad at the current situation, be mad at the president, be more mad at your senators and congressman … I am. But never in my life or for the rest of my life will I ever ignore the importance and meaning of our flag!

Thanks – however, as much as I want to get upset about McCain’s comments, I’m afraid I’ll need sources as I could not find any of those comments anywhere. I am voting for Obama – however, I can’t even imagine that McCain would ever say something like that. If he didn’t, it’d probably be in the best interest of those who believe in fair and honest campaign tactics that those comments either be sourced or removed.

We identify with smaller entities today: occasionally the community, more often just church and family. Flag worship is wishful thinking for a past that will never return.

Are the comments by McCain “if an American flag and a baby were on fire, you have my solemn word I wouldnâ€™t think of coming to that babyâ€™s aid until every last ember was extinguished from Old Glory.” for real or ones that someone madeup for a joke?
