We hunkered down for IKE, just as the author did. We lost our power, didn't know if our water was potable as we lived in the county, lost our telephone sixteen hours after the first storm stopped, lost our internet, and for me, my peace of mind.

I, too, do not believe the death toll is being reported correctly. One couple interviewed on Bolivar peninsula said that they had visited with many neighbors surrounding them just as the storm started, and every last one of those homes were gone when the storm subsided, yet they are not reporting that those people have been found. It is entirely possible that they were washed to sea, as well, yet we hear nothing of it.

Today, the Houston Chronicle reported that Mayor White of Houston unleashed some words seldom heard in Sunday school upon the bureacrats at the Reliant Center who had failed in their duty to get the PODS or distribution centers supplied so people could get water, ice, and MRE'S. They were in their sitting on buttitis form when the Mayor arrived from having visited one of the sites and a thousand people were waiting and no supplies had arrived at 12:30 p.m. Then, the miffed bureacrats insisted that they had been supplied and took umbrage when the Mayor, whom I think has done a fantastic job, called them what they were and insisted that all those loaded and sitting supplies on trucks be immediately dispatched.

Those same individuals who were failing their responsibility had come to Houston and were being paid, but originated in Georgia and another state. Their home states called the Texas Governor, who has done a sorry job just slightly better than FEMA, and he couldn't apologize enough. I sent him an e-mail saying that the Mayor deserved our undying gratitude and that he, the Governor, did not.
