My wife’s wise words notwithstanding, they’re representative of those who view abortion as a women’s rights issue. But to pro-lifers, that concern is dwarfed by one much larger: preventing murder. Furthermore, to them, a woman’s right to control her own body not only palls before the need to save a life, but is indicative of the me-first syndrome that threatens to rend the fabric of society as sure as abortion does. Phone call from Camelot

I got home from running a few errands today and the numeral “1″ was flashing red on the answering machine. The message was for me — and it was from Caroline Kennedy.

“Hey, Pat,” said a cheery voice. My heart stuttered. “It’s me: CK!” As if I hadn’t known instantly.

CK. That’s what I used to call her 30 years ago, when she and I used to perch on stools at our favorite bar every night but Sunday, down doubles of tequila, and feed quarters into the jukebox to listen to Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. Ah, the clink of the shot glasses, the splashes of tequila on the bar, the salt on the back of the hand, the lemon wedges, the neon beer signs in the window reflecting in her bloodshot eyes as I stared into them while the whole room spun — it all comes back to me now through a mescal haze. The porn bubble has burst. What for decades had been a growth industry has now gone limp. Popped a rod. Deflating as it may seem, millions of us saw it coming.

You know the next part like a bad movie. There will be a bailout involving obscene amounts of money. But we really have no choice. That is to say, it’s a compulsion. The prospect of losing thousands of part-time, under-the-table jobs in the San Fernando Valley is a frightening one. According to one expert, hundreds of idle garages in Burbank, Glenside, and Canoga Park could bring the entire economy of Los Angeles County to its knees. Full story »
