It seems like the real strategy is to get Iraqis to fight a civil war among themselves -- similar to the double-dealing of the Reaganites in arming both Iraq and Iran. If there's no booty for US, at least "we" sold a lot of weapons (to ourselves).

Cmdr. Huber: I'm afraid that BO's silence speaks volumes. Our approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will, i'm afraid, not change come Jan 21st. But it will be apologized for with the word "pragmatic", even though the most pragmatic course would be to suspend US military aid to Israel until such time as everyone has been to the table and produced a workable plan that is not only being acted on, but almost impossible to break.

I'm afraid that we'll soon see the same international behavior with new words to describe it, delivered with a smile. The empire has gone gangrenous but we'll keep hoping for a cure rather than accept the amputation.

Isn't arming local militias how Al Qaida came to be? How do the only people in the entire nation incapable of learning from their mistakes end up running the US military? With the largest military budget on the planet, surely we can buy something better..
There is no military solution in Afghanistan and arming an all ready fractious nation is a recipe for disaster. As with Al Qaida, this is practically guaranteed to bite us in the a--.
Afghanistan is failing because they lack a larger US miilitary presence but the don't have a strong central government and the country is impoverished and in ruins.
Karzai has failed to build a constituency in Iraq. Instead he has chosen to repesent the interests of big energy and US plutocrats. The Afghans understand this and there is a struggle to fill the power vacuum.
Afghanistan has not been rebuilt as promised . If the US would spend the money it uses to kill members of wedding parties and friendly soldiers on infrastructure, helping the Afghans set up a viable bureacracy to deliver needed service run by leaders they trust, we could turn this thing around.
I don't think there's is any interest in that. The powers that be want to keep Afghanistan in turmoil so there will be an excuse for continuing US military presence. Permanent US military bases squat along the pipeling pushed through right after Karzai was sellected.
As sure as day follows night, an extremist Islamic government follows in the wake of self serving meddling by Western Powers.

re Gaza: I don't buy the "one president at a time" any more. BO needs to take a break in the surfin' safari and say enough, because the Bush administration is pulling a "Revenge of Lebanon" sequel. They'll blame the Palestinians and let Israel do whatever it wants until Israel gets a boo boo then Keystone Kondi will be crying for a cease fire.

Ah yes, the classic PNAC paper. And Scott Ritter has said that Clinton ordered the inspectors out before he told the American people that the inspectors were being forced to leave. He wanted to go into Iraq too, but the crowd (it was Dayton, i believe) popped his trial balloon so he just did a little bombing.

It's beginning to look like Obama will walk squarely in a long line of foreign policy disasters. Afghanistan will soon become his war, and it will fail. I predict that the situation will worsen in proportion to the number of troops sent to improve the situation. And i agree that his response to the Gaza "situation" has been atrocious.

Permanent occupation of Iraq was the operational and strategic objective all along, of course, even before 9/11, even before young Mr. Bush was selected to head the neoconservative ticket.

I'm sure you've written about this; could you provide a link? I'd like to read more.
