I was kind of just poking Sam, although I do have a soft spot for all those outlaw country types.

Nora and I dance to Buddy Holly at least four or five times a week. A 39-year-old and a 3-year-old bopping to a guy who died fifty years ago; that's a kind of survival, isn't it? Not as good as the might-have-been, but it's something.

Sam: When I heard that Cream had disbanded, I literally shed a few tears. And I was truly blue when Buffalo Springfield called it a day. Heck, I hated to see The Clash quit.... As Brother Bill would say, "I feel your pain...." Still, with those examples, as with yours, there was hope for more great work. Here, there's only the sense of what could never be....

Ann: The "if Waylon..." question has always been weirdly problematic for me. Valens was such a kid we don't know what kind of talent he'd have developed into. And I remind myself that Buddy would still have been on the plane no matter what...but I guess all I'm doing here is betraying my own bias, so Ill shut up....

Exactly, Jim. I mourn for all the music that was stillborn, or never conceived in the first place. This is like, in a way, what I feel when a band I love breaks up (like Catherine Wheel or Space Team Electra, to name a couple), only worse. Rob Dickinson has a solo career and I keep hoping that Myshel Prasad will return to music with a vengeance some day, but with Valens or Holly....

Wasn't he supposed to have said something along the lines of, "I'd like to be Cary Grant, too?"

One of the best, most realistic dreams I ever had was about a date with Cary Grant - I was wearing the black and white Grace Kelly dress from "Rear Window," we went to The Stork Club the way it looked in all the movies, we danced and drank and at the end of the night I told him I'd had a lovely time but I was going to marry Brian. It was a fabulous evening.

Sigh.

Jim,

When I'm reincarnated, I want to be just like Grant's role, Dudley, in "The Bishop's Wife."

Jeff: Thanks, man.

Ann: I love the Caine tribute to Cary, too. In fact, in my next life I'm coming back as Cary - and I am going to enjoy it sooooooooo much...

I love that Michael Caine tribute to Cary Grant. It's true - some things, some people should never go away completely.
