This is the first time I’ve written about the Kaine/Webb/Gates timing but it occurred to me the first time I heard the “year or so” extension for Gates.

In a bizarre turn on the BBC comedy Yes, Minister, our State and Defense secretaries are little more than figureheads for the career military officers who have gained a stranglehold on U.S. foreign policy.

That’s pretty sad.

Hopefully, by the end of Gates’s “year or so,” Virginia governor Tim Kaine will have been succeeded by a Democrat and can take Jim Webb’s Senate seat, freeing Webb to take over at Defense.

Intriguing scenario.

Hillary’s business of words not meaning what they mean is hooey. Just like she didn’t vote to let Bush go to war with Iraq, even though that’s exactly what the bill she voted for said.

State’s gone to Hillary in a handbag. (Oops, now I have to write an essay to match that title.)

So, Jeff, you don’t belong to the “realist” school of foreign policy that believes Hillary’s words to be just part of the negotiations? Me neither, and i’m getting awfully tired of people rationalizing Clinton (et. al.) doing basically the same thing as Bush…without being able to provide a clear answer to the question, “How is it different?”

BTW, you’re the only foreign policy/military writer who makes me laugh out loud, thanks…it helps to keep me from weeping.
