I frequently encounter on-air news people from my regions CBS affiliate. I always try to get them involved in discussions about how their station is fairing in the current market. You should see how red their faces get when I use the the term "legacy Media". It truly upsets them, because, in their hearts, they know the world is shifting under their very feet, and they have only themselves to blame. How about we "let the markets work" on this one? There is demand for mass market news, but it is obviously not being supplied in a manner that folks are willing to buy into at this point. If the companies in that business want to survive, they will have to change. If they do not change, they will disappear, and, presumably, something better will take their place. If what takes their place is worse then they were, it will disappear too.

Every time you post something on our friends in the legacy press we seem to get a yahoo or two in the comment threads hollering something to the effect of "LET THE BASTARDS DIE!!!!" The sentiment seems to be that the MSM has failed up, down, left and right and that they're of no value to a culture in need of serious truth.

These screeds, of course, lack a certain nuance. And usually they lack anything like even a basic understanding of what news is and the role it plays in society. They seem not to have thought through the issue of who will do the actual reporting that all us brilliant bloggers are analyzing. And so on.

As you know, I'm no defender of the morons who have run journalism into the ground. The truth is that a lot of the frustration those commenters feel is justified.

Here's another newsfolk just flat-out NOT ... GETTING ... IT. I try to defend them, but they don't make it easy, do they?
