At least one restaurant here not only uses the paper to-go boxes, but has the forethought to put a piece of waxed paper between the carton and the food. That would probably only work with pizza if it was cut on the board rather than in the box.

Brian,
I found some information supporting your assumption (http://russelldad.blogspot.com/2007/06/whats-deal-with-recycling-pizza-boxes.html). Looks like you're essentially right--they don't accept pizza boxes as a rule because of the grease, but you can recycle the rest. Unfortunately, seen in that light, all this idea seems to do is create more bits of the box that you can't recycle (by putting slices on box top). Too bad.

Except I'd always heard that you shouldn't recycle grease-impregnated cardboard, ie pizza boxes. My understanding was that they gummed up the works somehow.
