Ah. I once knew a semiotics/linguistics academic and it reminded me of the type of terms she would reference, about which I would be fairly-to-utterly clueless.

Brad: that's just me waxing verbose on the signal-to-noise ratio thing. Cronkite was all about cutting to the heart of things, and our current system is all about obfuscation.

Sam, Russ, thanks for your kind words. Sam, the King of Signal and System of Noise? Pardon my ignorance but this went over my head. Do you have a short explanation or can you point me to a reference? Russ, I agree. Though that quote will probably benefit him monetarily, as long as network news remains in its current state.

Jeff, Gregory was specifically referring to his time, and that of his colleagues, as a White House correspondent. It would not be injecting opinion by calling out the White House on lies, illegality and accountability. Rather, White House correspondents who fail to do so are arguably either biased against the ideals of a democratic society as a nation of laws and/or don't understand the purpose of a free press and what their role is in it.

Gregory made sense, which is the first time I've heard that from anyone over at MSNBC. News, not personal opinions, is what should be given if they're going to call it news. Hey, I hear the same thing over at Fox and don't like it either. I've found the purest form of news to be the subscription news feed from Bloomberg, and I'm sure that there's very few over here that have regular access to a Bloomberg terminal. They do a great job of reporting just the facts......sometimes too many facts, but they usually spit out 3-10 stories(including updates) of some nature per minute. Bloomberg offers opinions/editorials, but on another feed that's clearly marked as such.

the procession of network news stars who praised Cronkite’s career but have failed to adhere to Cronkite’s journalistic standards
David Gregory's quote, especially, will hang from his neck like an albatross for the rest of his career. Great post as always, Brad.

Great piece, Brad. Lately I've been thinking a lot about society's bad (and worsening) signal to noise ratio, and this piece is another log on the fire. I think I've figured out what's going on, at least to some degree, and in the coming days will have a longish and wonky explanation that nobody will want to read.

In the meantime, what you've done here is illustrate a contrast: on the one hand, the death of the King of Signal, and on the other, the absolute corruption of a System of Noise.

Very well struck. Keep 'em coming....
