This is getting interesting. The Who are actually gaining on the Beatles and the contest is close. Hey, I LOVE the Who. Just love 'em. Spent many an hour playing air guitar to "Who's Next." i would vote them second best in this contest. The Beatles are special. I can't recall any band whose music grew and branched as much as theirs, yet still managed to be excellent music. I can't imagine any band that's had a more outsized impact on popular music. Keith Moon would be cool with it... after all, he gives a nod to Ringo Starr in the drum interlude of "Won't Get Fooled Again." Don't believe me? Listen to "The End" on 'Abbey Road,' then the aforementioned Who song. I can only imagine what kind of spirited one-upmanship these two bands (four actually, counting Floyd and Zep) would've had in the 70s had the Beatles stuck together. I think George would've taken the world music and folkedelica a whole lot further, John would've flipped between his own brands of roots rock, funk and punk, Paul would've finely honed his pop chops with John constantly on his case, and Ringo would've topped it all off nicely with his signature style. But have to go with The Beatles. Too many great songs, too much impact on global culture. The Who were louder, better instrumentalists (Townshend is still one of the three or four great guitarists), wrote some great songs (even though they had problems producing a consistent album), and were (and still are) one of the best live acts ever. But still, The Beatles had so much impact on practically everything that followed, both musically and culturally. Well, no, it’s not fun, since these would be my two finalists. I trace the genesis of epic rock (a la Tommy, 2112 by Rush, and American Idiot by Green Day) to The Who. But you could argue that The Beatles did it first (of course, you can make that argument about just about anything). And did The Who influence other bands more than the Beatles? Don't know.
