"I think of 1997 as being the best year for the last 30 years or so"

At first I kinda laughed this off because I often think of the early 90's as being the high point of that decade musically, but he may have a point.

Dylan, Bjork, Biggie, the Verve and Supergrass had albums that fans and critics loved. You also had some great break outs like Ben Folds 5's Whatever and ever Amen, Radio Head's OK computer, Blur's Blur, Daft Punk's Homework, Prodgey's Fat of the Land. Also probably one of the best albums ever Foo Fighters The Colour and the Shape. So although I do love the last year in music, I could say 1997 was one of the best years.

Also, Marvin, what are some of the CDs you haven't heard this year that you think are great? Are there things that the rest of us should be excited about but not listening to?

I haven’t heard any of these albums and for the most part I just can’t get excited about ‘em…

Hypothetically speaking, how can you gauge your excitement level without hearing them?

As far as the best year since 1979… what came out in 1979? I’m curious… I think of 1997 as being the best year for the last 30 years or so.

1979 was the year we got Regatta de Blanc by The Police, Candy-O by The Cars, Communique by Dire Straits (and the actual breakout of the debut), I'm the Man AND Look Sharp! from Joe Jackson, Armed Forces from Elvis Costello, It's Alive by The Ramones, Cool for Cats by Squeeze, and so on. Of course, 1978 was even greater than 1979, but '79 was a hellacious good year.

I also thought it was a pretty awesome year for music. Lots of people up here have been raving a bout Metric. You're the 3rd-4th person I've heard say good things about the Cracker album, I always liked them I may download it, I listened to a few tunes and they sound fun. I remember seeing SuperDrag at a dive bar in Murfreesboro about a year after their break out "Sucked out" they were a mess and got pissed when people wanted to hear that song. I always thought they were pretty damn good and never got enough respect. I'll have to check out some of the others.
