Updated: PR weasel words from Carbonite CEO David Friend re: Limbaugh's slut-shaming libel of Sandra Fluke

David Friend, CEO, Carbonite

Update from Carbonite @ Facebook/Carbonite Website:

A Statement from David Friend, CEO of Carbonite:
“No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show.

We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.”

That’s a step in the right direction, Mr. Friend.  Iff only you hadn’t supported his massive assortment of egregious gaffes with your advertising dollars in the first place.   Sadly, you remain silent on those matters.  Perhaps if you had a black child you would suddenly get it? What other children would you need to have before you understand the damage Limbaugh does with the nature of his discourse? To top it off, you also perpetuate the myth that Limbaugh’s Saturday comments constitute genuine apology.

Original Story

On Friday, March 2, 2012, David Friend, CEO of Carbonite, an online data backup company that has earned kudos from Inc. and PC World for company growth, ease of use and affordability had this to say:

A Message from Carbonite CEO, David Friend Regarding Ads on Limbaugh

Over the past two days we have received a tremendous amount of feedback on Rush Limbaugh’s recent comments. I too am offended and very concerned about his comments. Limbaugh’s remarks have us rethinking our future use of talk radio.

We use more than 40 talk show hosts to help get the Carbonite message out to the public. The nature of talk radio is that from time to time listeners are offended by a host and ask that we pull our advertising.
This goes for conservatives like Limbaugh and progressives like Stephanie Miller and Ed Shultz. We even get customers who demand that we pull the plug on NPR. As an advertiser, we do not have control over a show’s editorial content or what they say on air. Carbonite does not endorse the opinions of the shows or their hosts.

However, the outcry over Limbaugh is the worst we’ve ever seen. I have scheduled a face-to-face meeting next week with Limbaugh during which I will impress upon him that his comments were offensive to many of our customers and employees alike.

Please know your voice has been heard and that we are taking this matter very seriously.

Sincerely,
David Friend

Let me see if I understand this correctly. With a long and documented history of making over-the-top and outrageously bigoted comments, Rush Limbaugh finally offends David Friend.

Rush’s racist comments didn’t offend Friend enough to rethink “use of talk radio.”

REPUBLISHED! Top 10 Racist Limbaugh Quotes

Blaming the Sierra Club for oil accidents…okay by Friend. Downplaying the BP spill in the Gulf as “something the ocean will take care of”…okay by him as well. Suggesting terrorists support Obama…this, too. Overt sexism…yup. Comparing Obama to Hitler…it’s all good.

Rush Limbaugh Quotes

The list just goes on and on and on. But you fuck just one goat call a girl a slut, whoops, crossed a line.

Sorry, Friend, that line was crossed so long ago as to qualify as history. Slut-shaming alone should have been enough to trigger righteous indignation.

If Friend’s belated recognition of Limbaugh as an assnozzle isn’t enough (though it’s arguable that such recognition has actually occurred), Friend can’t quite just own it as it relates to just Limbaugh. Oh, no. He’s got to water it down as much as humanly possible by diluting Limbaugh’s rancid message with 40+ other talk show hosts, some of whom may also have said ugly enough things to warrant listener complaints and requests for withdrawal of advertising support.

He’s strikingly silent on exactly what horrible things were said on any of these 40+ other shows. He mentions Ed Schultz, but leaves out the bit where Schultz calls Laura Ingraham a slut. Is calling any woman a slut for any reason a bad thing? I’m inclined to think so. So why not pull ads from Ed? Even so, is likening that situtation to Limbaugh’s repeated vicious attacks against Sandra Fluke (aka Susan Fluke – we’re seeing her name both ways in a variety of sources) even close to fair? I think not. If you think it is, diagram it out for me because I’m clearly too stupid to see the connection. Maybe Stephanie Miller jokes at Scooter Libby’s expense were in the ballpark? Bah. Maybe Friend just missed out on the little detail that talk radio is overwhelmingly conservative. Without a list of the predominantly conservative talk radio hosts likely to populate Carbonite’s talk radio advertising audience, we can’t know for sure what else might not have offended Friend. That’s okay. Friend is clearly very thick-skinned. Maybe my delicate mind couldn’t handle more.

Rancid personal attacks on women notwithstanding, what else might Friend be diluting? Oh, his and Carbonite’s responsibility. “Carbonite does not endorse the opinions of the shows or their hosts.”

Bullshit. When you pay the messenger to get the word out to their select buying audience, one that’s actually amused, entertained and “informed” by a poo-flinging messenger like Limbaugh, you get shit on your hands. Carbonite aids and abets Limbaugh in spreading his special brand of ignorance, hate and race-baiting.

And just what does Friend intend to do about this? Wipe the shit off? Immediately pull the plug on the ad spots with a promise that maybe his ad money will return to Limbaugh’s shows when Limbaugh stops being a turdmonkey? No, that might be seen as principled. Instead, Friend is going to have a little face-to-face with Limbaugh to impress upon Limbaugh what Limbaugh already knows. As far as Limbaugh is concerned, that’s practically congratulatory. All he’ll hear is Limbaugh, Limbaugh, Limbaugh and maybe feel a little tingle where the sun don’t shine.

It could be that Carbonite’s customers are predominantly Dittohead-level right-wingers who think Obama painted as The Joker is funny. That women are life support systems for vaginas. That oil spills like Exxon’s Valdez and BP’s Deepwater Horizon will go away if you ignore them long enough. If so, Friend has nothing to lose. If that’s not the case, he might be better served finding another venue for his ads.

Stormfront could probably use the sponsorship. NAMBLA, maybe? How about a little victim advocacy? National Center for Men could use the funds. That would be okay, right? After all, Carbonite wouldn’t be endorsing them.

Update: Rush Limbaugh apologizes to Sandra Fluke for ‘slut’ jibe

In Limbaugh’s non-apology, he states, “I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.”    Further, Limbaugh continues to inappropriately re-frame the core issue in complete disregard of Sandra Fluke’s statement.  The issue, you may recall, is whether there should be a religious exemption for coverage of “birth control,” which itself is an unfortunate misnomer.  “Birth control” may be taken for a variety of reproductive health reasons.  WebMD outlines nine of them here, including lower cancer risk, relief from endometriosis, and relief from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

I’m not sure how one takes being called a slut and likened to a prostitute as anything but personal, but hey, this is about as close to a Limbaugh apology as I can remember.  If he really wants to enjoy a misogynistic dig, perhaps he could focus on some of the other reasons for taking the pill…minimizing number, severity, and frequency of periods and relief from PMS.  I can’t speak for women, but maybe they would find it in their hearts to indulge him that one if he lays off with his mischaracterizations of the issue.  Per the PMS stereotype, one would think misogynistic and unsympathetic men in particular would be lining up to support “birth control” availability on these grounds alone.

As for Limbaugh’s advertising supporters, this should be a lesson to the ones that are still on the fence.  Pull the plug.  Pull it while it’s hot and fresh.  Get out “clean.”  “Why?” you ask.  Limbaugh  just “apologized,” after all.  Because if Limbaugh, of all people, can at least create the appearance of recognizing the magnitude of his impropriety and you cannot, you’re actually now a step worse than Limbaugh.  He capitalizes on his BS and “apologizes.”  You can’t just capitalize on his BS and keep on rolling with it like it never happened.    Besides, there’s still that whole backlog of racism, misogyny, and hate-mongering linked above to consider.

  1. I am a 71-year old female Carbonite customer; I complained to Carbonite yesterday and they ignored me. I will be cancelling my subscription immediately and will send a message to my entire address book urging everyone else to do so, also.

  2. I own a small company and had been thinking about switching from onsite server back ups to Carbonite (or setting up my own off-site cloud back up). Thanks to this, my decision has been made easier. I would never consider using Carbonite again and will make sure I pass along my recommendations to others.

  3. I have considered getting Carbonite …but I will no longer do so. Limbaugh is a one man hate factory and his goal is to tear America apart…to divide Americans and propagate SHOCK. In essence he is a destroyer of life and why anyone would advertise for him is beyond my ken unless they too are without principles.

  4. I am a Carbonite customer (or rather, a former customer). I called today to complain and to cancel my subscription. They were indifferent, at best, offering excuses, but refusing to give a refund for the unused portion of my subscription. Based on this, and on the fact that their product never worked for me as advertised, I would not recommend Carbonite to anyone.

  5. Well said. Friend playing the false equivalency game just proves he doesn’t want to pull his ads. And the fact that he is presenting his meeting with Limbaugh as a solution just shows where his sympathies truly lie. I would not want to do business with someone who can’t tell the difference between the occasional mistake and the orchestrated vitriol that is LImbaugh’s stock in trade.

  6. Melda. You were ignored because you were one of thousands of people who decided to call that day with a Rush complaint they could do nothing about. Its not personal so stop being so sensitive. In fact I wish all of Carbonites so called ‘customers’ would stop being so sensitive. GET OVER IT.

  7. @Eric I wasn’t in on Melda’s conversation, but there’s a world of difference between being ignored and at least getting quality customer service. Would it have killed a phone rep to say, “We appreciate your concerns. I’ll make a note on your account and forward to the appropriate department.”

What exactly should Carbonite customers get over? Limbaugh’s racism? Misogyny? Hate-mongering?

Tell ya what, how about people like Limbaugh get over the fact that women are people, too. That race/ethnicity do not devalue a person? That President Obama is the president because the best the GOP could muster against him was McCain/Palin?

Don’t like this response? Get over it.

  8. We use Carbonite for our corporate backups, however when our subscription expires, it will be moving to another online provider.

  9. Wow. I bookmarked an article about Carbonite in the LA Times recently and was seriously going to inquire about using their services. Glad to know I will NEVER be using them after this disgusting display. This guy actually compares the Rush Limbaugh debacle with people who dislike NPR?! I don’t recall NPR calling anyone a slut recently. This is beyond disgusting. Thankful I didn’t invest in Carbonite or I would have had to go through the hassle of canceling their services.

  10. As far as I’m concerned, everything worked as it should in this case – at least as far as the reaction goes. If Carbonite supports Limbaugh’s radio show, they must know that he’s a controversial figure and they must be ok with that. And the CEO exercised his right to react to the backlash to Limbaugh’s comments. (Let’s face it, he’s not reacting to the comments, just that they were noticed.) And, by the looks of it, some folks are reacting to both choices. If enough people do that, Carbonite will ACTUALLY re-think their strategy. The choices companies make, both originally and as a reaction to an event, define them. As consumers in a free market society, we get to decide what to do about it.

  11. I listened to the whole show to see what the hullaballoo was all about. I don’t get it. Out here in the hinterlands, any women that stands up in front of the world and says she needs $3000 of contraceptives a year in order to survive, and then asks me to pay for it, has already labeled herself purty good. Heck, old Limbaugh is just negotiating the price.

  12. “Carbonite does not endorse the opinions of the shows or their hosts.”

Like hell they don’t. Handing over advertising dollars that allow this bloated sack to broadcast his filth and hate is an endorsement whether Friend likes it or not. I choose not to do business with companies that associate with scum like Limbaugh.

  13. I was referred to use Carbonite and was just signing up on Friday. I am THROUGH with them BEFORE I GET STARTED !!

  14. I’ve been a carbonite subscriber for around 6 months. I was relatively satisfied with the service but called customer service today informing them that I would not be renewing my subscription if they continued advertising with Rush. The more often they hear this the better.

  15. I do use Carbonite, have friends who do also (2 have been ‘saved’ when computers crashed), and am asking Carbonite to please join Sleep Train, the mattress store (announced that they are pulling their ads from his show in response to his derogatory comments). I do hope that eHarmony and ProFlowers stop considering and just pull their ads, too.
Rush has become more and more offensive (to me, any way, when I’ve read articles about some of his comments), and needs to suffer some consequences for his horrible behavior. I was doubly offended by his ‘slut’ comment to the young woman who’d testified before a senate committee about a friend’s medical need for birth control pills. From http://blog.nj.com/njv_editorial_page/2012/03/rush_limbaugh_rightly_loses_ad_1.html
‘For Rush Limbaugh to suggest that birth control is akin to having sex for money, and in the most demeaning terms, is not just insulting – it’s 100 percent wrong. For one thing, women use birth control for a range of reasons, including treatment for medical conditions. And, while it’s awfully sad that this is a newsflash in 2012, here it is: millions of women from all walks of life, including mothers and wives, use birth control.’

  16. Thank you sir. I will go back into my account and re-instate my auto renewal with Carbonite.

  17. I too listened to the whole show. As usual, all of the outrage is from people who only catch ‘snippets’ of Limbaugh’s show or hear comments from others who don’t like him and they jump on the bandwagon. Sadly, this country is chock full of people like that. Indeed she did make the comment about needing $3k per year. Seriously, do you REALLY think that it’s the taxpayers’ obligation to pay for men or women to have sex? REALLY? Wake up America! I’m not insulted by Limbaugh…. I’m insulted at your stupidity and lack of common sense. Take the time to listen to his program instead of making ignorant assumptions. His comments are constantly taken out of context, all because of ignorance and hatred. Your outrage should be directed at the fools in congress who support this nonsense.

    • Yes, it’s our fault Rush said things that have forced him to, for the first and only time I can remember, apologize.

My bad. This is on me, folks.

  18. To Carol and Martin Baker — Carol says, “Take time to listen to his program instead of making ignorant assumptions.” Carol, why don’t you take time to do actual research on an issue instead of taking an intentionally-provocative commentator’s word for it? For the umpteenth time — Ms. Fluke did NOT ask taxpayers to fund her sexual behavior!! She testified regarding insufficient coverage from a private insurance policy that SHE PAYS FOR. You and Rush and all his other minions — get your facts straight! Limbaugh fabricates, dissembles, conflates. All those synonyms mean that he LIES.

  19. Carbonite is a chickensit outfit. Although Rush did not say it well he is right. If you want to pull the plug on Rush because he tells a law student to pay for her own birth control. Then you have no respect for the first amendment and I will never use your product!

  20. I guess Left Wing Hate speech is OK!

Carbonite still sponsors the Ed Schultz Show even though he said this:

    I Love the Hypocrisy!

BTW, Rush Limbaugh is a Jerk, but I cant stand the double standard!

  21. I Love the Hypocrisy! Schultz got suspended for a week with no pay. When Limbaugh cops the same, then you can talk of hypocrisy from Carbonite.

  22. Let me get this straight… Public pressure forces an important sponsor to pull ads from Rush, and you decide that the best response is to attack him online? Hoping that maybe you can convince other sponsors that there is no point in pulling their ads too, because they will be attacked anyway? We should congratulate this guy for making the right decision, and welcome his move – and hold him to his word.

    • Eric: I think you’re right that he should be congratulated for doing the right thing and held to his word. However, I don’t think we’re very well served if we pretend that he hasn’t been knowingly bankrolling a racist and misogynist for years. It’s perhaps a fine line that has to be walked – but he has to feel convinced that this is a better path while at the same time understanding that he should have known better all along.

  23. I guess Mr. Friend thinks it’s ok for me, as a tax payer, to supply his daughters with condoms. The young lady is supposed to be going to school, not having sex, evidently with about anyone since she needs so many condoms. If I am going to pay for them to have so much sex, I feel we should get to at least watch the vidio. I would never use your product. Your daughters are what we used to call easy. SEND ME THE VIDIO.

  24. Appears you were just adverting where you could get the biggest bang for your bucks, with no belief in principles. For those leaving you, and I would never consider joining you now, be advised that Dropbox.com is a tiny bit more expensive but a much better piece of software. Even though Carbonite is a little cheaper, I firmly believe one gets what one pays for, and now I feel much better about my use of Dropbox – it is a superior product in my opinion. We can also make statements with our wallets, sir!

  25. I am a loyal Carbonite user and will remove it if Carbonite does not continue to advertise on Rush’s show. Every negative comment here displays the same hatred and vitriol of which Rush is being accused. People who believe that one should be responsible for their own actions are not ipso facto stupid or evil. The young woman in question is a sad reflection of an entitlement society gone mad. If the class warfare promulgated by “liberals” hasn’t already been lost, Ms Fluke’s ascension to the Supreme Court in 25 years time will certainly signal the nail in the coffin of the unique and exceptional project that is ( was ) the American Dream of Liberty.

  26. And to the argument that she is only asking her insurance company to provide something she pays for…..For the umpteenth time, the provider refuses to cover contraception on religious grounds. Someone who believes someone should be compelled to provide a service for ANY reason does not fundamentally understand the concept of freedom. And the willingness to use government power to do it shows a preference for state interference into something of which they approve which displays an acceptance of the essence of totalitarianism and is anathema to democracy. I am a Canadian and see this tendency in my own country and see the need to fight it every day. Our freedom from statism requires it.

  27. It is disturbing to see so many comments that believe Sandra Fluke was asking for someone else to pay for her medication. This is not true. Students at Georgetown pay their own insurance premiums on a policy arranged by the University. Her point was that since the students were paying the premiums the University should not decide on religious grounds what is covered. Also, there are two issues here and they are quite separate. One is stated above and is somewhat complex and worthy of intelligent discussion. The other is the conduct of Rush Limbaugh. I cannot understand how anyone can defend what he said. Look at yourself in a mirror and ask how you would feel if the attack was on you, your daughter, or a close friend. What Limbaugh said, and kept saying, is vile and indefensible.

  28. Think about this. There is an argument being made here that the University has the right to decide according to its Catholic beliefs not to include contraceptives in the health policy it negotiated on behalf of the students. Keep in mind the students pay the premiums. Would it also be ok for the University to tell staff they cannot buy contraceptives with the money they earn working at the University?

  29. Limbaugh’s judgment is more impaired than ever. He’s obviously fallen off the oxycontin wagon.

  30. The Ditto Heads still support him, which says a lot about America’s far right wing loony tunes. He did not apologize, BTW, he only used the wrong words. I suppose he now thinks he should have called Ms. Fluke “a lady of the night” or “working girl” or “woman of ill repute.” His mindset is definitely 19th century.

  31. FREEEEEEEEDOM!

Ya know, i don’t give a fuck what Rush says or what the idiots who need him to tell them what to think, think. I don’t have a fuck who this woman has sex with or how often she does it.

Within exactly the same reasoning, i do very much give a fuck that certain people believe that they have the right to delineate the freedoms of everyone else. I just don’t get how conservatives (and liberals will do it too) think that they can cry “Freedom” and then let loose the dogs of constraint on personal liberty.

  32. Bye to Carbonite….Playing politics with advertising now allows me to seek another online vendor for my computer support base. With politicians, loyalty does not mean anything. You have crossed over the line from being a ‘business person’ to being a ‘pol’ supporter. Now I can cross the line from needing your software by transferrring to another vendor. Your ‘caving-in to being a support of free speech will not stop with Rush. Wait for other ‘cave-in’ to come your way. Its a slippery slope. Ms. Fluke choosed to ‘go public.’ With that goes the pressure that flow from it. She is no longer a private citizen. Her comments are open to everyone’s interpretation and not just to the administration’s intent. So much for free debate in the public forum. As a business leader, you flunked the test of allowing political influences to be intertwined with the ‘free market’ forces. Though your ‘picture’ in the mainstream press will shine for awhile, your business base will suffer by customers like me transferring to other venders for services you proivide.

  33. I feel it was inappropriate of Mr.Limbaugh choice of words. Get over it!! Since you feel to withdraw your advertisement I shall consider to cancel my subscription of Carbonite!

  34. Freedom don’t apply yo ladybits Lex.
Everbody read Charlie 468, comment 35. Fluke paid for her healthcare and wants it to cover, you know, her health. Sadly, for the dittoheads amongst us, in the modern century, that means reproductive rights
Alan Glover Every negative comment here displays the same hatred and vitriol of which Rush is being accused.
No, we display a dislike for multi-millionaire drug abusers using their bully pulpit in a dishonest manner, he lied, how about you?

  35. This young lady talked about another woman that she knew that lost an ovary to cancer due to the lack of affordable birth control pills. Her entire point was that many woman use the pill for medical reasons, she said nothing about “having so much sex” that she wanted rush or any of you to buy her birth control pills. And digest this little nugget…. The woman that lost her ovary was GAY. I have 3 daughters and they have all used the pill for medical reasons. Now if you want to talk about Limbaughs use of viagra during his trip to the notorious land of underage prostitution, the Dominican Republic with his Fox friends to indulge in a bachelor party, I’d love to hear what you have to say all you Limbaugh butt suckers.

  36. Which, Another Kiwi, is precisely my point. We’re all for our own freedom and not so staunchly supportive of everyone else’s freedom. Hence Rush can’t understand why his freedom to call other people names should be abridged but why it’s ok to restrict a woman’s freedom to obtain birth control through her insurance.

What Americans want, and this far too often applies to liberals as well, is the freedom to make rules for everyone else to live by. We’re a funny people … and by “funny” i mean really stupid.

  37. I have just been called a “butt sucker”… I am sure Francine March does not use your product… I do, and will not re-new… The gate swings both ways… Mozy, here I come!!!

  38. Randy, Randy, Randy. The name is Francine. March is the month. I’m sorry I hurt your brain when you read my post. No I do not use this product, because of their connection to limpballs, but I did use pro flowers because I did not know they supported that slime, I wrote them to take me off their mailing list, I will NEVER use them again.
Take an aspirin Randy, they also work for headaches!

  39. We should embrase every company that drops slimebaugh, without regard to their motives or that they even advertised with the misogynatzi at all. Even if they were wrong, we should accept victory. Otherwise, they have no incentive to drop him.

  40. Last week my company made the decision to go with Carbonite for data back-up. After reading Mr. Friend’s comments, and his apparent support for Ms. Fluke, a liberal activist who is attempting to set women back 30 years, not to mention needs to grow up and take responsibility for her life, I have decided to go with another company.

I cannot and will not use company funds to patronize a business that supports entitlements for recreational activity on the backs of taxpayers and other insurance policyholders.

Mr. Limbaugh was right. Ms. Fluke was wrong. If someone is going to try to promote such an absurd idea as hers, she needs to be blasted with both verbal barrels. Get a job, Ms. Fluke. You attend one of the most expensive law schools in the country, wear designer clothes, own nice jewelry and apparently have time on your hands. You offended alot of women with that helpless me stunt!

  41. What a bunch of crap coming from leftwing lunitics! Keep going Rush! The truth hurts doesn’t it MSM? Just spare me the false outrage and excuses for another privileged student. Keep your pants on and pay for your own liberal fun. Tired of the hypocrites.Quit wasting my time!!!

  42. How many of you have read the transcript of Sandra Flukes testimony and watched the video of Russ Limbaughs remarks in full? If not why are you posting comments that clearly do not reflect what either of them said.

  43. Sue Rosenthal, truth and Mr. Limbaugh are only distant acquaintances. I do not think that holding Limbaugh accountable for his statements is left-wing lunacy. And that is, simply, the point. He used his freedom of speech and people have argued with him about what he said. He has admitted that he spoke unwisely. I think that rules out any assertions about the truthfulness of his statement, he has said that it was wrong.
Coupled with his long history of racist and general abuse, it should be enough for any fair minded person to never listen to him again.

  44. I am not paying for her birth control…….she goes to an expensive school and chooses to have sex. Where are the guys in all this.? She is a slut. Rush told the truth.

  45. I believe Rush was making the point that this women complained about going broke because she had to buy her own condoms for sex. I assume its condoms because birth control pills can be bought for around $15 bucks a month, so that cant’ make you go broke. Let’s say $100 a month for condoms is the going broke point. At $1.50 per condom thats sex 67 times a month. Sounds to me that Rush was spot on.

  46. Debbie and Len: Please read the transcript of her testimony. She did not say either of those things.

  47. Come on folks get your facts at least close to straight. The $1,000: it is $1,000 per year and she was testifying about a friend who spends that much for a prescription for birth control pills given for purely medical reasons. Second, she and all other students at Georgetown pay for their health insurance. It is not paid for by the University. The taxpayer pays nothing in the situations at issue.

  48. She came to this school for the direct purpose of causing trouble. She knew darn well a catholic school doesn’t pay or believe in birth control. Anyone in this country can get cheap birth control. What about unprotected sex……does that not matter anymore. There is nothing positive to say about this girl. Notibg

  49. So those of you who think contraception should not be covered because it is used for recreational sex, are you ok if it covers Viagra for the men? I feel pretty secure in saying most college age males do not need Viagra for procreation related activities.

  50. Did she borrow the Obama time machine to go forward in time to see when the Republicans would get their knickers in a twist about reproductive health and then go back to enrol at Georgetown so that she could be in place to try to appear in front of Issa’s Boys Club? Man those tricksy liberals, eh?

  51. The companies that are pulling out of the Rush Limbaugh show can now have the money to pay for Sandra Flukes birth control pills. Shame on the bunch of you for giving in to pressure and not standing on morals,

  52. Im backing Rush on this one. Carbonite, good luck selling your product to the muchers in the world. Maybe Obama can get them a tax rebate if they buy your services. Course it didnt help G.M. HEard they stopped making the VOLT. Solydra anyone?

  53. Now we’re getting the high class arguments!
Suzie, read the transcript, the birth control pills are not for her. And those that use them will pay for them.
steve marshall, throwing enough mud so that some will stick is exemplary 4th grade debating, but cuts a little less mustard amongst the grown-ups.

    • Thanks to the dittoheads for dropping into the comment thread to illustrate what happens every day on Rush’s show: stupidity, spitefulness and a fact-free environment. Asimov described our democracy as being predicated on the prinicple that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge,” and here’s your proof, if you still needed any.

  54. To SBT868ers, Another Kiwi, charlie46 and the rest of you of similar ilk,

YES, I did LISTEN to the testimony. My bad, I mistakenly said $3k/year when I should’ve said $1k/year for contraceptives. I urge all of you to listen to her testimony online…. it’s pretty quick. She says ridiculous things which, hopefully she’ll be ashamed of when she’s older, has a real job, has to pay taxes and live in the real world. I often find young people to be full of ideals as to how they would run their ‘perfect world’, where everyone is full of love for each other, they all live in perfect harmony and power hungry dictators don’t exist. It’s interesting that her political beliefs differ from her parents. Gee, what a surprise… You all need to understand that the pill, condoms, viagra etc. are not the responsibility of the taxpayers. My daughter uses the pill to even out her cycle. She takes responsibility for that. Ms. Fluke’s friend might have lost her ovary regardless of what she did. But let’s be honest here, the #1 reason the pill is used is for birth control. 40% of the women at her college STRUGGLE because they can’t afford the pill?… Married female was forced to go w/o protection because she couldn’t afford it?…Ms. Fluke’s fellow students SUFFER FINANCIALLY, EMOTIONALLY AND MEDICALLY because their insurance won’t cover contraceptives?… and so on. Ms. Fluke has to support her stand with something to back her up, as does anyone who takes a stand on anything. She deserves a pat on the back for sticking her neck out there but her arguments are weak and frankly embarrassing. The pill doesn’t cost much for those w/insurance – around $5-25/month. Without insurance it’s around $26 to a high of $36. I was told that most often it’s around the low end for both situations. I doubt that students spend their entire weekends in their rooms studying. They might go out for some beer, a meal and maybe a movie. They often will go out Fri. and Sat. A married couple will usually go out a few times during a month. They will easily spend $25 or more. There’s a way that they can afford the pill…. IT’S CALLED A BUDGET! That’s what most of us have to do. Grow up Ms. Fluke and the rest of you! And here’s a nugget of wisdom…. most insurance will include students until the age of 26. Why aren’t they on their parents’ policies? Or. SHOP AROUND. There’s plenty of help to be had through the state that you live in. Rush’s delivery may not have been in good taste, but then much of the foul stuff written by many of you is nasty. Who’s calling the kettle black here? Ever listen to the likes of Tom Likis? Michael Moore? I’ve heard far worse from people like them. Rush will sometimes go to an extreme to make his point because that’s a way to wake people up. He knows that he’ll get butchered. However, if you naysayers out there would ever open up your minds and ears, you’ll find that you’ll learn much. Most of his INFORMATION is accurate because he’s IMMEDIATELY called on it…. picture vultures just waiting in the wings to pounce.

  55. I will NEVER buy from ANY advertiser that drops the great Rush! This will backfire on all of them. This is exactly how spineless liberals play their game. Just read their Posts; thats all the evidence one needs . Here we have $5 @ gallon gas and the focus goes to this leftist-activist whom the liberals just “drool” over. Oh that’s right, that’s what her kind wants!! LOL

  56. Carol: Good on for admitting your mistake. The point is that Fluke wants her university healthcare to include reproductive health. Maybe she is not on good terms with her parents and why should she have to be?
As for Rush as victim, no he is not. Really, that’s not an informed view.
RUSHISRIGHT: An all caps name is always good for being taken seriously. @ means “at” doesn’t it? Please review the timeline and see who made this person the focus. If Limbaugh had kept his mouth zipped, this would be forgotten history. He made it the focus. He is copping some heat.

  57. Will each of the quitting sponsors dare to publish before and after financial statements? Don’t count on it. Boycott targets all. Good work Rush! Come on November.

  58. Just letting you all know that I will not support any of these sponsors that pulled out for Rush Limbaugh. We have freedom of speech and we as tax payers should not have to supply our hard earned money to allow women to have birth control. If you don’t want to get pregnant, then don’t have sex. Easy as that. Let’s just call a spade a spade. Remember all the nastiness that was directed at Sarah Palin? She was called foul words and accused of her son not being her own. The list goes on and on. Liberals are the most hateful, intolerant, judgemental group of people. You oppose them, then the hatred is spewed out of their mouths like Satan himself.

  59. For Another Kiwi, This is the last time I’m bothering with all of this. I hope you realize how patronizing your tone is when you speak. I never said Rush was a victim. He can take care of himself as he has for decades. I’m not worried for him. I wonder how much you really spend on getting the facts about what has been going on around you these past few years? And how would you know if Fluke is on bad terms with her parents? Just because they don’t agree with her views doesn’t mean that at all. Why would you even think that? Is that how you are with people who don’t agree with you? And you’re wrong about Fluke’s story being forgotten. Just as the media (I won’t bother saying liberal – oops I just did) runs with anything that can be used to stir up anger against ‘those mean conservatives/Republicans’, you can bet that they’d milk this for all that they could. There has been plenty of that going on this past month or so since the whole contraceptive issue was twisted into a silly mess by the media and certain individuals. Rush wasn’t an active part in that as you will recall. I’m truly puzzled by people who think like you do. What do you see when you look at what’s going on in Greece, Italy, England, France and soon more of Europe? Who do you blame for that? Bush? Do you know that Margaret Thatcher spent most of her 25 years in office trying to change the mindset of the English people? Their tax rate was an average of 75% or more when she came into office. They were used to government handouts; believed that it was the government’s job to take care of them. When she left office that outlook had changed and the average tax rate was 40% – still too high but better. It has gotten worse since then. I’ve spent some time in England and Canada and I was able to read the local papers and speak with people living there. With the exception of only a few, the large majority HATE their healthcare system. Do you know that as of last July the London area hospitals were in debt $545 million pounds? The newspaper headlines and the news channels said that they were going to have to start rationing senior care. Before I retired I met a few nurses and doctors from Canada over the years. Not one of them was happy with Canada’s system. The doctors all had the same story; they trained for free cause the government desperately needed them, then they were required to work for 5 years, THEN THEY LEFT AND CAME HERE. Why? Who wants to be a doctor when he isn’t allowed to treat his patients as needed? The taxes are horrendous and the whole system has been operating in the red for decades. Obama knows this. Are you really that blind to what’s going on here? History shows that great countries destroy themselves from within. Go back and take a look at required reading material in the elementary level in the early 1900s in our public schools. Then take a look at them now. When it’s said that we’ve been dumbing down our kids, that’s not a joke. Here’s a comment that was made to me by a college GRADUATE recently: We were discussing the pros and cons of developing a rail system in our area vs. using cars. I’d mentioned several common-sense cons and lastly mentioned that the real cost for ridership would be about $26 one way. She said that that was okay because it would be SUBSIDIZED! I was speechless. We live way outside our means. For every person there are only 2 workers contributing social security taxes. It used to be 10 not that long ago and more before that. If your monthly income is $3k and you’re spending $4k it’s just a matter of time when it all collapses. It’s no different with the government. I don’t know how old you are but if things don’t change in the small window of opportunity we still have, if you’re in your 40s or less you’re going to pay big time and if our monetary system collapses we’re all going to left with nothing. My husband and I have worked hard over the years. We’ve denied ourselves things, stayed out of debt, paid off our home and socked money away on a regular basis. We took many trips with our kids, kept things simple yet our kids grew up having had rich childhood experiences. We started saving when we were in our late 20s. We are middle income earners. We look forward to however many years together we’ll be blessed with in our retirement. If our monetary system collapses we’ll lose everything as will everyone else, including you. Good luck to you.

  60. Too little, too late, carbonite. By your silence before you showed that either A.) No matter what this nazi said, money was the bottom line for you, as long as he had listeners, people were hearing your advertisement. It didn’t matter what kind of people. B.) You agreed with everything he said before in his career and were, therefore, never offended. Shame. Birds of a feather.

  61. By the way, never have I heard such ignorance in my life. Truly frightening. Righties: He’s apologized for lying, or he’s apologized for chickening out and not having the backbone to stand by his bigotry. Either way, he’s backed down. You still stand by him, either liar or coward? Doesn’t say much for your reasoning. Sad. You are incapable of thinking for yourselves.

  62. carol, while you seem to be a paragon of virtues and common sense and have had the good fortune to do exactly the right thing always, a simple google search of ms. fluke would answer some of your questions:

Before attending Georgetown, she graduated from Cornell University in 2003 and spent five years working for Sanctuary for Families, a New York-based nonprofit aiding victims of domestic violence. While working, she launched the agency’s pilot Program Evaluation Initiative. She also co-founded the New York Statewide Coalition for Fair Access to Family Court, which successfully advocated for legislation granting access to civil orders of protection for unmarried victims of domestic violence, including LGBTQ victims and teens. Fluke was also a member of the Manhattan Borough President’s Taskforce on Domestic Violence and numerous other New York City and New York State coalitions that successfully advocated for policy improvements impacting victims of domestic violence.[6] While at Georgetown University Law Center, she also worked on issues that involved domestic violence and human trafficking.[7]

she’s over the age to be on her parents’ insurance, she apparently HAS lived in ‘the real world’, has held jobs and even appointments of some consequence…her bio does not lead me to believe that she is just a girl out for a good time at college…

i also know plenty of doctors here in america that are not enthralled with our health care system…the fact is that there is no one perfect system, but we can come pretty close if we don’t fall prey to ‘death squads’ and ‘omg!!! it’s socialism!!!’

years ago i had the misfortune to have to work an airshift during rush’s show…being young and just starting out in radio, i had never heard of him before and was at first amused by his parodies and some of his comments…but after about six months of his constant harangues and his digs at women, minorities and anyone who doesn’t agree with him, he began to pall…and apall…as a woman, with a daughter, for the life of me, i cannot understand how you can listen to his misogyny…and condone it! that says a lot about how you feel about women yourself…

and dale wills? really? girls who use birth control are sluts, yet you want to watch the ‘vidio’? i have a case of the heebie jeebies that i may not ever come out of…i only hope you don’t have daughters…

  63. “No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke . . .”! Isn’t the woman 30? Is 30 the new 18? And “well-intentioned” is not what I would call someone intent on picking my pocket to buy her filthy devices.

Hey Ms Fluke: indulge your vices on your own dime, and then you won’t be inviting comments on your behaviors.

  64. This CEO should be embarrassed to condone the type of promiscuous behavior that she wants tax payers to subsidize. Great example for his hypothetical daughters! I know many who will stop buying his and other companies products who boycott because of true family values. Perhaps he should raise his family in Sodom instead where her ideas were born!

  65. Carbonite continues to runs ads during (MS)NBC’s “The Ed Shultz Show” even after Ed apologised for calling conservative radio show host Laura Ingraham a “right-wing slut” and a “talk slut”, yet they pull their ads from Rush Limbaugh under very similar circumstances? This isn’t Carbonite acting with prejudice, rather, it is a small company with an eroding financial position acting out of fear induced by Liberals who wish to attack Free Speech whenever it doesn’t suit their agenda: Which, in this case, is to deny the exercise of free speech by conservatives during the course of a Presidential Election cycle. Should Carbonite go out of business as a result of pulling ads from the most popular radio program in the country, I have no doubt the Liberals will praise them as willing to sacrifice everything to “fight hate”, “support womens’ rights”, “protect free speech”, etc.

    Thanks for reading!

  66. Rush was right, only I would not have used the word slut. The appropriate word is “WHORE”. Hope Carbonite goes out of business soon!

  67. I propose that Americans go their separate ways. It’s clear that we pretty much hate each other; there is no such thing as a loyal opposition; and no amount of reason will find a middle ground.

The Mason-Dixon Line seems like a logical demarcation. We can dissolve the federal government (including the military) and the North and the South can start fresh, with maybe a two year window for everyone to move where they want to be. The North can be for liberals and the South can be for the conservatives. It’ll be great.

  68. Frank B:
i understand everyone makes mistakes, but it is more important to focus on the changes that people make for the better. first of all, there are plenty of a-holes out there who haven’t pulled their advertising. second, do not make crass judgments of people you don’t know. did you even know he has an adopted son from Korea? so why don’t you do your research before you make jabs at people regarding race and discrimination.

  69. What attack on free speech? He used it and he could do it again right now. What it is, is holding him accountable for what he said. If he can’t back himself and explain himself, well he should shut up. I guess the “apology” shows that he knows it was a mistake.
As I pointed out before, Schultz was suspended for a week with no pay, until Rush does the same you cannot accuse Carbonite of hypocrisy.
Why do you hold Limbaugh in such high regard? He is a recovering drug addict, has a long history of racism and sexism, and is a self proclaimed “entertainer”. Yet he is feted as some great Conservative. It’s like supporting Archie Bunker as a great conservative.

  70. One last time. Google Fluke Transcript, read or view what she said. She did NOT at any time advocate taxpayer dollars being used to pay for contraception. It was Rush Limbaugh that introduced that myth just before he ran his mouth.

  71. Rush Limbaugh exercised his first amendment right to freedom of speech. Consumers exercised their similar right to express their opinion to their suppliers. Limbaugh seems to be finding out that the right to freedom of speech comes with responsibility. He is now being held accountable for his outburst. He may also find out the first amendment does not give the right to slander someone.

  72. I just have to get in here one more time…. for charlie468….. try to follow this charlie, Obama’s healthcare plan WILL cover contraceptives. He has involved himself in this whole issue. THE TAXPAYERS WILL BE PAYING FOR IT. Also, I suspect not everyone paying premiums for Georgetown are in agreement with Ms. Fluke. The more that has to be covered, the higher the premiums. And for bbkf, too bad that you look down on those of us who CHOOSE to do the right thing. There was a time, sadly getting farther in the past when that was the way that most responsible people tried to live. It has nothing to do with being a ‘paragon of virtue’. How snide of you. It hasn’t been easy. II don’t really care what Ms. Fluke has been involved in. Lots of people volunteer their time and talents for things that they believe in. This ‘paragon of virtue has’. All that she has done have nothing to do with her push for coverage of contraceptives. Her arguments are still weak. And gosh, I guess I must be a female woman hater according to you. Everything comes down to what your values are which plays a role in what you ‘hear’ when someone speaks. I’ve never found Rush to be against women. You have. I’ve listened to him for years. Rush haters try to understand this statement. Rush defends decency, being responsible for your actions, not expecting the government to take care of you, getting a good education, working hard to achieve your goals, defending liberty, our way of life and our constitution. . I ‘ve learned much. I’ve also learned much from many others… speakers, authors, documentaries etc. It doesn’t matter what I say because you’ll rack your brain to counter anything that I say, because you hate. Also, it’s scary when people like you can so easily embrace the idea of this country becoming a socialist nation. Really, have you had your head in the sand for the last few decades? There’s plenty of proof in front of your face showing that the socialist concept destroys countries and its people. For some people, doing is seeing. I think that you need to go live in Greece, France or England. Once you get past the ‘charming culture’ and reality of their way of life hits you, then you’ll finally appreciate what people like you helped to destroy here. More and more Americans want the gov. taking care of them. I see it all around me where I live. I see some people look hard for a job and I see plenty of others who like getting an unemployment paycheck. I constantly see employees who are protected by strong unions bilk the system; punch in for work and go goof off, play up ‘ailments’ and get paid for weeks for doing nothing on taxpayer dollars, and much more. That’s what I live with and none of that comes from listening to Rush. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll know that you’ve seen the same around you. There is a sickness in our society that has been creeping in since the 60s. Wise men know that and are trying to heal that. Fools ignore the signs and just get sicker.

  73. Carol,
Have you ever lived in any of these “Socialist” nations?

I see people all around me living on the government dole too. I laugh, right out loud, every time i see someone pay for groceries with food stamps and then load the bags into a car covered with Republican bumper stickers. So let’s not pretend that it’s all the evil liberals living off the government.

What, exactly, is “our way of life”? I’m sure that you know from all your time reading and watching documentaries, etc. that we only adopted the extreme free market ideals that typify modern America a few decades ago. You’re probably old enough to remember when we didn’t recognize foreign copyrights. My point here is that “our way of life” has never been static, and there were no good old days. My quaint little city that the tourists flock to in order to walk the parks on the lake shore used to be full of whorehouses and the lovely parks downtown were mostly stinking industrial zones.

Does “our way of life” include slavery and not letting women vote? Is it pre or post-automobile and the massive changes that came with industrialization?

Men used to get drunk and beat their wives in the black and white nostalgia of the 50’s. Abortions were performed. Women had sex, sometimes out of wedlock and sometimes while married to another man. We’ve always had a drug problem. We used to be able to buy opiates over the counter, and then morphine was developed to help people kick their opium habit … after which, heroin was developed and sold to help people kick their morphine habit. Middle class white women were the biggest users of opiates when they were over-the-counter-legal.

So again, what is this “our way of life” that you speak of as if it were a static concept that doesn’t include the ills of modern society?

I won’t even bother entering into a discussion about the Constitution, but i will say that if you’ve voted for a presidential candidate from either major party in the last 20+ years, your words are hollow. None of them have even pretended to follow the document you pretend to love so dearly.

  74. Carol, apparently you have trouble sticking to one topic. This story and post is about Carbonite pulling its ads because of what Rush Limbaugh said about Sandra Fluke as a result of his incorrect statement about what she said. She did not advocate for the taxpayer to fund anything. As far as insurance covering something one insurance holder my not like or use I expect that is the case with virtually all insurance. Couple of simple concepts. She offered her opinion. Just because you dont agree does not make her wrong. Maybe you are wrong. What Limnaugh said is wrong by the standards of any decent person and I expect by the law as he may find out. Can we not have any respectful discourse in this country without having it degrade into slander?

  75. I purchased Carbonite for both my computers based on advertising with Rush. Now they through Rush under the bus. The CEO is a clown. I am now looking for a replacement for carbonite. Any ideas?

  76. No one menetions that there are 3, yes 3, places near campus where she can get FREE contraceptions. Planned Parenthood has an office less than 2 miles from campus.

  77. Suzie, Ms. Fluke was not talking about herself. Read the transcript. What sort of contraceptions (sic) do they have at those places? Would they have the pills needed for Fluke’s friend who has fibroids in her uterus. Why can’t that lady’s health care insurance pay for that? The woman pays her money in, surely she should get some , you know, healthcare, back?

  78. Carol you sad little creature. You’re like the kid who came to class without doing her homework and then profusely tries to defend herself by attempting to deflect responsibility with babble and nonsense.

Even though its been pointed out to you repeatedly where you can go to learn the facts of the subject here you continue to write more long winded nonsense that not only lacks truth but any kind of credibility.

I strongly suggest – first – that you grow a brain, don’t be lazy – do the research so you can comment intelligently instead of this childish hysteria you’re displaying, Second stick to your word when you say you’re going to stop commenting – show some integrity and do what you say.

Coming back and writing another long winded response that has copious amounts of text with no organized syntax structure, or cohesive thought pertaining to the subject – will only cause more laughter at your ignorance.

  79. yes, carol, the man who continually refers to women who refuse to live their lives barefoot, pregnant, in the kitchen and dependent on males as ‘feminazis’ just looooooooves women…you can feel the love just dripping off his dulcet tones…and the same man who demanded that fluke and all the women who use contraception tape their intimate moments and send him those tapes to watch is indeed displaying a decency that is obviously so advanced, someone like me and thousands of others cannot grasp it…

i don’t ‘hate’ anyone…i only used ‘snideness’ in my response to you as you were looking down your nose at fluke and the thousands of women using birth control with the misguided notion (placed there by rush, who clearly does not know how birth control, women’s bodies work or insurance works) that women who use contraception are rampant sex fiends. you also stated that fluke needed to get out in the real world and then she’d know what was what…that’s why i included her bio, so you could clearly see that she has been a part of the real world…and i would venture to guess that if one can be accepted into georgetown’s school of law, one would have to be intelligent, hard working and responsible…

i see a lot of the commentors are suggesting that fluke and her friends go to planned parenthood to get free birth control…i thought planned parenthood was bad and only performed abortions?

and let’s not forget about the ‘socialism’ aspect of planned parenthood, social security and medicare…if we’re all so afraid of it, wouldn’t it be best to get rid of it? i don’t see where every citizen of our great country doesn’t have the right to decent healthcare is ‘socialiist’ especially since s.s. and medicare are not perceived as such by those who use them…even our founding fathers dabbled a bit in that area…why is it wrong to wish to alleviate sickness and suffering? it seems to me that that is what we call human decency…

and in the end, fluke did not ask for taxpayers to cover her birth control costs…again, that was a misunderstanding and miscommunication on rush’s part…instead of vilifying women who are taking care of their health and forgetting that we are fully functioning human beings not just a bunch of vaginas and ovaries, we should be doing what we can to make sure that when and if a woman chooses to have children, they go into motherhood with the best possible health and getting the best possible health care…after all, a country as great as ours deserves to and depends on our littlest citizens getting the best start they can…

  80. As a student at Cornell and treasurer of a pro-choice organization at the school, Sandra Fluke, helped shut down a pro-life speech on Cornell’s campus by counter protesting. She argued that a pro-life organization at Cornell was about “manipulating [students’] emotions” with misleading statistics about abortion. But when it is her turn to speak on Capitol Hill, the third-year Georgetown Law Student demands she gets her say in a hearing that has nothing to do with birth control.

  81. Thank you for withdrawing your support of rush limbaugh. Jennifer Hayes M.A.

  82. Since Samuel Smith likes to give out private email address he’ll be happy to know that he can send his comments to David Friend at david.friend@carbonite.com. I wrote him to inform him of my cancellation of my subscription. All of you who have had enough of pompous ass liberals should consider doing likewise.

    • We see no place in this thread where Smith published any private information. Pointing to Mr. Manley’s architecture firm is not publicizing a private email – the website is public information that anyone Googling could find.

If this is what you’re referring to, then you are incorrect.

      • Dr. Smith quite simply added the very public URL of a company’s site, which had been inadvertently omitted by the poster, so that other conservatives would know where to send their business. If you can show me where I gave out a private e-mail address I’ll be happy to apologize and delete it. Otherwise, I’d ask that you stop lying to our readers.

  83. Dear MS; where should pompous ass conservatives send their emails? I assume you would know.

  84. Oh no, Fluke was an activist!!! You wouldn’t get James O’Keefe or the late Andrew Breitbart being activists. Is that why Issa didn’t let her into the boys club?

  85. On the Rogues and Scholars “Leave a comment” form, it is stated that “E-mail (will not be published)”. Well, in fact, Samuel Smith, a representative of your company did indeed publish my email, de facto, by performing a Google search using my email address, which is protected by the written contract between your company and myself. Looks like an easy lawsuit to win and likely worth thousands of dollars to me should I pursue my claim in court. MS was entirely correct in stating that Samuel Smith posted a private email because he used private information from Rogues & Scholars database to find and post my company’s website address. It was an illegal action, contractually protected information and simply an unethical activity on his part.

In truth, I am satisfied to confirm that once again, a group of liberals cannot even be trusted to hold up their end of a simple privacy contract that they themselves created. How much credibility do these people have going forward?

If Mr. Smith denies this, as did the Admin, that my website is public information that anyone could Google, they are both covering up. For starters, I did not indicate that I owned the business I referred to. Most employees refer to their employment as “my company”, and often have decision-making power if they are a manager. Second, there are a number of Patrick Manleys who own and/or manage businesses around the world. There is a reason why Smith was 100% sure that he posted my company’s website simply because he breached our contract and used my email address to search it out. He can deny this, but Google keeps records for a very long, long time, as does his service provider. Its easy to verify.

Lucky for these amateurs that its irrelevant to me whether or not they post my website address. I suppose they have this illusion that business and money supercede principles and individual rights. Clearly it it does in their world, they proved it by illegally finding and posting my email address via my website. However, I live i a far different world where principles always take precedence over money.

What I would really like to see is these two guys explain to me why Rush Limbaugh’s sarcastic analogy between Ms. Fluke and “sl_t” and “prostitute”, is worse than when Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a “dumb tw_t” and on a separate occasion, a “c_nt”. Or when Ed Shultz of the Ed Show called Laura Ingraham a “sl_t” last month? The last time I checked, neither had apologized. Where are the claims of misogynistic behavior here? Are these two not women haters by your standards? Should you not also call for their advertisers to halt their ads?

No question that Limbaugh should have apologized for the language. It was disappointing that he said what he said in the first place considering he regularly pokes fun at politicians and media personalities for what they say or do, but typically refrains from personal attacks like this. Unfortunately, he knew beforehand, as did I, the real purpose of Ms. Fluke’s testimony, and it had nothing to do with birth control or women’s rights, but had everything to do with individual responsibility versus government mandates.

Well, thanks for the forum. I’d like to say its been enlightening, but all you did was reinforce a stereotype. I suggest that the readers who agree with your positions may want to re-think what they post considering the email privacy statement is not being honored. Gosh, does Rogues & Scholars always behave exactly like the big corporations you despise? Ouch.

[Admin: Mr. Manley, we are looking further into your claim above. If it turns out you are correct, we will of course apologize for our error.]

    • Re: the Manley comment above:

I did not reveal Mr. Manley’s e-mail address in my comment. However, I did use access to this information in identifying his business. After discussing this with Admin and the editorial staff, I agree with Mr. Manley that my action was inappropriate and I apologize for the ethical breach.

The information in question is being removed.

[Admin: And we apologize as well. We did not know the full situation when we commented last night. In the future, we will ensure that we wait until we have more complete information to weigh in on issues like this.]

  86. Thank you, Sam and Admin. Very professional of you both. Apology accepted. I think its only appropriate that I apologize as well for my “amateur” comment, as well as my sarcastic “corporation” note. Both were not relevant to the discussion.

You know, I understand that politics bring out both the best and worst in all of us. I am a conservative Republican who grew up in a Democrat household. My dad was a blue collar union worker, I am a college graduate in a white collar profession. I grew poor in Appalachia but make a good living in a large city. I am not a “one percenter”, but I work for a number of them. They are generally the nicest and most generous people I meet. Many started out in poverty. Most from the middle class. With few exceptions, the don’t forget where they came from.

My point with sharing a little information is that I often see both sides of political issues as a result of my background. Some issues I’ve lived, some I haven’t. If there is one common thread that I see in both liberals and conservatives, its that the vast majority are good people, give back to their community and work hard. Its the others that bother me. The “others” are the takers from society, not the givers. These people cross all party lines, economic classes, religious affiliations and ethnic classifications. You find bad people everyplace, but you find many more good people everywhere. At the end of the day, we are still Americans even when we disagree. Life is not too short to disagree, but it is way too shot to hate. That’s my core philosophy in a nutshell. I hope I didn’t put you to sleep!

  87. I wonder if the platinum health care plan congress enjoys covers birth control pills?

  88. I wonder if the RNC has a health care plan and if it covers birth control pills?

  89. Patrick Manley says: “For starters, I did not indicate that I owned the business I referred to. Most employees refer to their employment as “my company”.

Actually they don’t, people say “the company I work for”, “My employer or employers” or “at my job or my place of employment” because to use “My” attached to ANYTHING implies ownership. But as everyone will see you implied it again…….but first in another statement:
“and often have decision-making power if they are a manger”

Not if their decisions are based on their personal political opinions. Seriously? No company in the world would give a “manager” the green light to make business decisions based on his/her personal political OR even religious beliefs – you can’t weasel your way out of that one with such weak, and unprofessional claims.

So Let me get this straight its ok for you to blast Carbonite professionally, under the guise of a professional decision made by “a company” because IT feels Carbonite is not worthy of its business due to their support of Miss Fluke’s human right to not be slandered, her right to not be subjected to embarassing lies and public humiliation from a national talk radio host who basically smeared her reputation to millions of people? Oh and “the company” gets to remain anonymous? Why? You get to use your company’s weight to bolster the importance of a decision as long as you don’t have to actually validate its real? Thats not fair or professional! Your choice of course – hypocritical as it is…….but then you forgot you signed your FULL name – I’ll get to how easy it is for ANYONE to find the company you own in a little while.

By stating “My company made the decision…..” and then later added, “I cannot and will not use company funds to patronize a business that supports entitlements for recreational activity on the backs of taxpayers and other policyholders” which solidifies a deliberate implication was made to appear as either owner or partner or CEO of a business. Managers require approval unless they’re a managing owner/partner, etc…. I assume you thought it would carry more weight, otherwise why else would you announce it was a company that was cancelling its subscription at all? You could’ve and should’ve ommitted the words “my company” completely.

I wonder if the desire to keep your company name out of your complaint was because you knew your statement regarding Fluke’s, “entitlements for recreational activity” was not true or was it because you are just lazy about getting the facts straight? Its hard to believe someone with intelligence and integrity would continue to depict Ms Fluke and her testimony the same way Rush Limbaugh did, when there are now videos, transcripts, etc of the entire testimony available to the public? Yet that’s exactly what you did. Don’t you feel embarassed that you’ve proven to all who read this that your characterization of Miss Fluke and her testimony is a lie?? Just remember, you reap what you sow

Even more telling is your continued demoralizing of Fluke stating she is “promoting an absurd idea,” (you claimed she said the government and/or taxpayers should pay for her recreational activities) she has too much “time on her hands” (and you know this because??) oh…. and she needs to get a job, (because you said so, right? btw she’s has a job and has steadily worked for the last 7 years, plus volunteers her time to non-profit organizations, all while first attending Cornell for 2 years and now 3 years at Georgetown, plus ske managed to squeeze in co-founding the NY statewide coalition which legislated fair accesss to family court guaranteeing civil orders of protection for unmarried victims of domestic violence. Among MANY more impressive achievments and she has paid her insurance premiums the entire time!) finally “she needs to be blasted with both verbal barrels” (because she derserves it right?). Apparantly you did not bother to research your poor characterization of Miss Fluke – proving that your hatred of her because she’s a liberal is so consuming it doesn’t matter that your facts are not only untrue but it displays a mentality that appears to take much pleasure in spreading vicious untrue gossip, and demoralize another human being just because they don’t think the same way you do. How incredibly mature and professional of you! No wonder you didn’t want anyone to know the name of your company……

Your claim that it effects other policy holders and taxpayers is wrong as well, again failing to research those declarations. One assertion you made was that Miss Fluke’s testimony regarding health coverage (if passed) will cost the taxpayers and everyone elses premiums to rise……a myth. FYI Insurance companies are required to use a national schedule of pricing based on the policy coverage. It varies minor amounts from company to company depending on what’s included in a policy. But all health insurance companies are required to price the premiums of a particular group or individual coverage according to that schedule, the premium costs effect the people who are in that particular group and NO ONE else – and its STILL a choice by said group. They can always opt out if they don’t want the coverage. Once again your so called concerns, fall flat in the face of the HIPAA national standards. I don’t expect people to know that off hand, I know it because I worked for insurance companies for 5 years, also medical billing for even longer, but I certainly would not be so disengenuous as to make inflamatory claims like that without verifying the validity of them.

Do you think you hold credibility when you’ve made multiple statements that mislead, enflame or imply hollow facts; you’ve a displayed a considerable amount of disdain and contempt towards Miss Fluke a person you know nothing about – even less of her cause, yet you judged and admonished her, bashed her character with malice and forethought (hey your words not mine)

“he (Rush) knew beforehand, AS DID I, (Really?) the real purpose of Ms. Fluke’s testimony…..had nothing to do with birth control…… and everything to do with individual responsibility versus government mandates.” And this sounds believable because…. A. you’re a mind reader and knew what was in her heart. and B. liberals often go before congress to say they want the government or taxpayers to pay for their lifestyle! I its amazing to think that Congress would agree to listen to such nonsense?

You know darn well she wasn’t asking for handouts from the government. Because you’ve got ears and unless you took english as a foreign subject in highschool, you’re not THAT stupid. However you are twisted sick as evidenced by the hate filled insults – your mind is effecting your ability to act sane and think logically before opening your mouth. Talk about a need to grow up and act responsibly. yet, instead of taking the classy way out by shutting up and not making a mountain out of a molehill, or dare I say……accepting the apology from Samuel you throw more light and attention onto yourself and your business by threatening to sue this site (Rogues and Scholars) over some imaginary breach of privacy you claim to have suffered. BTW, they didn’t have to print your response Patrick, I’d at least fake a little restraint if I were you.

Here’s another shocker for you! There is NO law or expectation of privacy on the web. None, zip, nada……especially when you leave your full name on a site for the whole world to see.

“If Mr. Smith denies, as did the Admin, that my website is public information that anyone could Google, they are both covering up…….”

No they’re not, and yes that’s exactly what your website is – PUBLIC! It took me less than 3 minutes to google your name, find you, your picture, and your company’s url address. (your website url is now gone from Samuel’s post)

“there are a number of Patrick Manleys who own and/or manage businesses around the world.”

Thats the first lucid intelligent and valid argument you’ve made. But still not good enough. On Google’s page 1- the first 2 entries are LinkedIn profiles – 25 to be exact. All but 4 work for someone else. (see below). The next two are FB and twitter accounts which I didn’t look at and then you’re the 5th Patrick Manley listed! Directly under that are some photos which 2 are yours, then there are 6 or 7 more entries on the page but I only looked at one as the others did not pertain. So page ranking is working real well for you….or maybe not?

    LinkedIn Profiles:
There’s a PM who co-owns a R.E. management company and his profile indicates high volume sales, marketing and management – ruled out quickly because it didn’t fit my impression of you.

Another PM is an attorney who is co-partner of a law-firm – definitely NOT you attorneys have a talent for making sound arguments even if they’re not true plus you don’t seem to have any knowledge of laws regarding the web.

There’s a “Pat” Manley who owns a professional consulting and training company. His profile indicates he coaches individuals in career advice, business ventures and team management. This was so NOT you.

And then there’s your profile which I didn’t really look at – at the time because there was no picture on the listing and I’m impatient – I prefer to visually search quickly then go back if I don’t find what I’m looking for. I knew there were some pics on the google page and I wanted to check them out. that’s when I saw your profile

You’re the ONLY Patrick Manley who had a business website address right under your picture and name in the entry. Easy as pie so I suppose the ease in which I found it blasts your next assertion right out of the water……
“There is a reason why Smith was 100% sure that he posted my company’s website simply because he breached our contract and used my email address to search it out.”

It doesn’t matter how he searched you, he did NOT post any of your personal information. And the fact is anybody could and DID find you by googling your name. Again, your own fault. Samuel is not the only one who is 100% sure. I saw his original post the other day and it did have an http business url NOT an email address. I didn’t bother to click on it because I don’t care what business you do or own the only thing I care about or was annoyed by first your character assassination of Miss Fluke and your refusal to acknowledge facts, but you were not the only one that day that posted nasty lies and character assassinations. There were at least 6 or 7 of you and I don’t have time or interest to know more about you people. But looking at your post today, I became incredulous by your absurd claims, your arrogance and your ridiculous entitlement mentality. I had to call you out for it. And it was so easy. Indeed, it was obvious to me it was you when I found your picture, and even more so when I saw that your business name was YOUR last name! Immediately it hit me. I knew it was you!
first your picture gave it away! Yes, your photo…….to be blunt (after all you certainly were regarding Fluke) IMO you have the look of an uptight, sexually repressed, individual who lives inside a bubble of puritanical self righteousness. Second your business name….very you……..It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or inside info to figure out it was in fact you!

I do remember the http url was the ONLY link Smith put in his post because when I saw MS’s post accusing him of posting your personal email address I went back and looked at it again and sure enough the only link it showed was a website url NOT an email address. btw I am more than willing to swear or testify to THAT if needed 🙂 Again, ….you reap what you sow! Your lies have come home to roost. You and you alone are responsible for protecting your own privacy on the internet, another misnomer since a PUBLIC website is what your trying to “protect”.

  90. Great, Patrick, now you make a liar out of me by accepting Samuels apology. I did not see your reply when I pasted my response here because I wrote it earlier but didn’t proof it until now on my wordpad.

And now your tone is so different as well. Well I guess I should admit I have a better opinion of you now that all the anger and accusations have subsided and there seems to be a more gentlemanly respect too, so I take back the uptight, sexually repressed…..puritanical self righteous comment I made. I was in my own self righteous mode when I said it.

I believe you are more reasonbly minded then you came off earlier. But I stand by my frustration of the way you characterized Fluke. I just wish that people wouldn’t jump on the Limbaugh bandwagon and support his massive insults and exagerations.

His perception is ignorant and uninformed and are made purely to enflame and incite anger. He is no journalist and rarely if ever says anything true. Zero credibility is Rush Limbaugh.

  91. Carbonite is now — and always has been — losing money hand-over-fist at the rate of $20+ million per year.

Look at its 2011 Annual Report: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1340127/000119312512101462/d277280d10k.htm

The company has an “accumulated deficit” (accountant-speak for “cumulative loss”) of $100 million.

Carbonite was rescued from insolvency by an IPO last summer.

Losing its Rush-relationship will leave it ever more vulnerable to the growing competition.

Beam me up, Mr. Speaker! … Carbonite’s kamikaze CEO has effectively cut his own throat to protest Limbaugh’s jokes about Sandra Fluke’s crusade to compel other people to pay for her and other Georgetown Law students’ birth control!

  92. JD, I think I will limit my repsonse. When I stated that Rush Limbaugh knew about Sandra Fluke, as did I, just about everyone who monitored the progress of the hearing prior to the actual appearance by Sandra Fluke had already been aware that she was a liberal activist and had been recruited through Nancy Pelosi’s office. Prior to the her testimony, she had been interviewed, prepped and run through a mock testimony. Furthermore, the purpose of her appearance, although it backfired, was to make the argument that Republicans were opposed to birth control, redirecting the focus from Obama’s record to a non-issue. A campaign talking point if you will, and a lie considering most Republicans, like most Democrats, are in favor of birth control and have been so for decades.

Things went south for Pelosi and Ms. Fluke when word got out ahead of time. Everyone assumes someone in Pelosi’s office leaked it, possibly intentionally, possibly not. That’s how I knew ahead of time. I got the information second hand from someone I know who is close to the situation..

In any event, as I previously stated, this has nothing to do with the original topic. By the way, I got a few chuckles out of your post. I suppose if one has no real arguments, all that is left are personal attacks. Not good thing JD. Certainly not very tolerant and it reinforces the sterotype that liberals are indeed intolerant and always resort to name-calling.

Samuel and I do not agree on this issue, nor do I expect him to. We settled our differences and should we ever correspond or meet in the future, I expect that we will continue to disagree but it will be civil. We both learned something about each other.

Finally, I stand by my opinion of Ms. Fluke and I also stand by my opinion that Rush Limbaugh is a decent guy, but that he should never have made those comments about Ms. Fluke. He apologized, and rightly so. I wish Bill Maher would apologize to Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton for the disgusting things he has said about them. I don’t expect him to because I do not believe he is a decent guy, and it has nothing to do with his political views. In my opinion, there is no circumstance where it is acceptable to call any woman those types of disgusting names.

Then you have someone like Louis CK who used the same language as Maher on top of ridiculing her autistic son. Its incredible to me that anyone can be so foul and disgusting. If criticism is going to fly at Limbaugh, and he should have been criticized, let’s include these other two losers and widen the discussion beyond narrow ploitical bickering.

  93. Pat,
Bill maher, does not speak for the democrats. He is a comedian. On a pay cable channel. Mr. Maher does not broadcast his opinions to 20 million viewers over American air waves that my tax dollars goes to pay. Rush is the voice and the brain of the GOP. He says what they think, and they repeat what he says. He was made an honorary member of Congress in the early ’90s. The Bushes had him at the whitehouse many times. The president carried his luggage to the Lincoln bedroom and little Bush presented Rush with a birthday cake in the presidential home. They are all afraid to speak ill of him and they all apoligies when they do. There is no way you can compare the two men, although I know that this is your talking point order from the cult of the GOP that you must spew. Actually, what the GOP wants to do by preventing insurance companies from covering birth control will cause insurance to go up in price. Just think, it is cheaper to provide contraception then the cost of giving birth and infant healthcare. This requirement was already in place in over 8 states, some put in place by republican legislatures and no one from the right said a peep. Churches are exempt. Catholic hospitals and collages take federal money and they cannot pick the laws and regulations that they wish to follow, that was already decided in the supreme court many years ago when the leader of the mormen church said he was exempted from the palagimy laws because it was part of his religious beliefs.

  94. I find the term “liberal activist” interesting. Activists have a long history in America and around the world of being the catalyst for needed change. People unafraid to put themselves forward to point out conditions in need of change. Slavery, women;s rights, abused workers and so on come to mind. Too often the terms “liberal activist” , “right wing activist” , “religious activist” are used to diminish not to describe. For those who consider themselves to be on the right “tea baggers” are great and “occupy wallstreeters” are bums and vice versa if one considers themselves to be on the left. Sandra Fluke is an activist and I think that is to be commended. She rehearsed before going in front of the committee, well so what. I rehearse all my important presentations. She is offering a point of view and backed her arguments with reason. Whether we agree with her or not she deserves to be treated with respect. Limbaugh was just plain wrong as he has been many times in the past when he resorts to invective and distortion of peoples views. Of course there are examples on the left, many of them named in posts, and when they attack people personally they deserve the same wrath. Schultz, for example, deserved everything he got..

  95. Francine, So if someone is a comedian then it is perfectly fine to call a woman a “dumb c_nt”, a “tw_t”, a sl_t” and make and ridicule a woman and her son who has birth defects? That is sick. There are no circumstances where it is ok to call women these disgusting names.

  96. Charlie, There you go having to inset “teabaggers” into your post. Name-calling?

If someone is a liberal activist, rehearses or is hand-picked by a congresswoman, that’s fine. Trying to sell this person as an ordinary young woman who simply wanted to express an opinion she felt was important is a lie. Its only fair that when someone is speaks to a congressional committee that the truth be told about who that person is and who they represent. This cuts both ways whether liberal or conservative.

  97. Patrick,
Where did I say that what Bill Maher said was just okay-dokay? Now please explain to me your views on what else I posted. (about the public airwaves that my taxes pay for). Limbaugh is in a completely different category then any other partisan voice that we hear. I truly believe from the depths of my heart, that the world would be a better place without the background music of his hate. Also you have some beautiful homes on your site, I loved that big one with the horse in the front, gorgeous! I was shocked thou, when I read that you were involved with the designing of solar homes! Don’t tell anyone, they will kick you out of the cult.

  98. Francine, you excused Maher for two reasons: He is a comedian and he doesn’t broadcast to 20 million viewers.

Any portion of your taxpayer dollars that go to support the airwaves can be traced back to elected Democrats (FDR) that choose to regulate broadcasting. Your tax dollars do not support Rush Limbaugh. You support the bureaucracy that regulates him.

Thank you for the compliments, Francine, but I think you have a distorted understanding of what conservatives are about. The solar home comment is a good example. The left loves to claim that conservatives do not care about the environment. This has never been true. Do most oppose the EPA, the Department of Energy and the mounds of regulations? Most likely. What is there to like about these bureaucracies that accomplish little, impede business and suck up more tax dollars?

You described Limbaugh as being hateful. That tells me you have never listened to his show, but rely on the opinions on those who oppose his ideas. He’s actually anything but hateful, but if the fact that an opposing opinion is the same thing as being hateful, then I don’t have a comment.

Francine, I am sure you are a good person and believe in what you believe. That’s fine.

  99. Sorry, Charlle. You are right. I had to run out and didn’t address your post completely.

Being an activist isn’t in and of itself a problem. Activism under deception is.

I agree with you that the language Limbaugh used was reprehensible. I was disappointed when i heard it because its so out of character for him. I would have been even more disappointed had he not apologized. He did so publicly twice. Too bad Maher and Louis CK have not. Yes, Schultz did. Thanks, Charlie.

  100. Patrick, Bill Maher is a somewhat odd case. Sometimes I hear him interviewed and find him to be intelligent and his points worth considering. At other times I fail to see how someone with his intelligence can say and do what he does. His movie Religiosity was disgusting to me. I just fail to see humor in mocking a peoples religion. His specific comments about Palin and others were also uncalled for and should not be accepted by either left, right, middle or wherever else one might be. By the way, I hold him in the same low regard as Anne Coulter…got to stay balanced.

  101. Charlie,

IMO, Bill Maher;s movie “Religulous” didn’t seem to mock religion so much as it mocked the people who displayed bizarre or hypocritical behavior.

But I also know its a sensitive subject for those who believe in god and the bible and I respect their right to believe in whatever they want. I hope you don’t take offense to my opinion. I do believe in god but I have very strong doubts about the validity of the bible.

I also think any comments Maher has made with regard to Sarah Palin are accurate and she deserves to be treated the same way she treats others. She is a very mean spirited person who has said many insulting below the belt comments about our president. She’s accused him of being a muslim (not true but even if it were so what? She seems to forget this is why we came to America in the first place.) She has accused the president of not being an american citizen without any facts to back up her claims – its just her way……she doesn’t check her facts before she opens her mouth. She’s called the president a pig and a nazi too. Among many other despicable claims she made on the campaign trail. T

Today she continues to spew vile untruths and has encouraged and incited violence in her public speeches towards democrats as well. I don’t have one ounce of respect for that…..I can’t even call her a women because she is such an embarassment to my gender.

She doesn’t respect anyone outside her party nor does she have any respect for the president. I could tolerate her ignorance if she wasn’t so mean but she also displayed that behavior and abused her power as governor of Alaska when she had her ex-brother in law fired from his job due the divorce from her sister. Who does that? She had no right to do that (contrary to what she claims about the 32 ethics charges against her that most were thrown out.but the truth was 21 stuck, that being one of them – she was NOT able to get out of and in fact was fined and sanctioned for it)

She also implemented and passed a law which gave low-flying aircrafts the right to shoot wolves dead from the air giving an incredible advantage over the wolf – but the most sickening thing she did in that law was to also implement extra reward money – $150 for EACH right leg the hunters brought back. The wolves posed no danger to the hunters nor were they killing great amounts of deer which is why this law was imposed. Many many wolves were slaughtered due to this law and now they are just one step closer to being endangered. Sarah Palin is not just mean spirited and rude but she plays the innocent “soccer mom” role (very poorly I might add) to garner sympathy from her followers. She hid the fact that evey event she’s was invited to speak at during the campaign, she had Alaska pay for the flight, meals and hotel suites of her entire family even though they were not invited. (this was another one of her ethics charges) She was once prohibited from taking 16 gift bags, given to celebrities stored in a room at a hollywood event – claiming she thought they were free. They were but the sign stated only ONE per person. She knows no boundaries when it comes to taking what she wants without permission. Thats stealing in my book. And Palin must’ve slept through history the entire time in high school because she can’t get one single fact correct anytime she is asked. She actually said Paul Revere rode through towns to warn the BRITISH that they couldn’t take our guns. Even though there were no British to warn in those towns – and there was no such thing as gun control back then. Upon being told the correct version of what happened she insisted that she knew american history and that she was correct…..She STILL claims she wants the president to produce his birth certificate even though he has and its been authenticated TWICE by the Hawaii Supreme Court. I think we should make her produce her high school diploma because I can’t believe she graduated from any school with that kind of lack of intelligence.

And I see Patrick is up to his tall tales again – his random without thought accusations this time regarding Bill Maher ‘s usage of the “C” and “B” words, I’ve never heard Bill Maher use the C word, even in his stand up and I’ve been watching him for years. He has used the word “bitch” in his jokes but SERIOUSLY? it just doesn’t have the impact Patrick claims it does and he acts sooo insulted by that word its just plain childish. Puh-leeze Patrick go cry your phony offense to people who bs the same way you do – you might get some sympathy from them.

  102. JD, You need to do your homework. Everything I posted about Bill Maher, Ed Schultz and Louis CK are 100% true. I carefully researched it before I wrote it. If you are going to write such angry and hateful posts, at least make an attempt at providing credible facts by not disputing events that are well documented. By the way, I do not believe that Sarah Palin ever accuses Obama of being a muslim. I believe she accused him of “Palling around with terrorists” due to his friendship with 1960’s radical Bill Ayers. This eventually was twisted around by Obama’s campaign in 2008 to make it look like she made the muslim accusation.

  103. Just to remind everyone of one little fact that hasn’t been mentioned yet. Limbaugh’s show was the very first place that Carbonite advertised nationally. Their business has taken off from there. Yes they since bought advertising on other programs, however, without Limbaugh, there probably would be no Carbonite. At the time they bought that advertising, they were 4 months from running out of money.

As for me, I am a co-owner of a hardware store in the NorCal foothills that began advertising on conservative talk stations locally 18 months ago with some of the spots during Limbaugh’s program. The first time we ran the ad on his program, our phones were besieged by phone calls from groups paid for by Media Matters and others. However, we were ready as the radio stations warned us about it. We assigned one person just to answer the phone and the annoying calls were blocked one at a time. You see, even if you block you number on the land line or cell phone you are calling from, it still is transmitted to the phone company and for a little extra fee per month, do have the ability to block the number. We also had a couple of vandalism incidents on the building and customer’s cars, but once again we were ready, the idiots were arrested and we effectively put a local “astroturf” group out of business. Oh, by the way, did I mention that sales were up in the store 55% in the 18 months since the advertising began? When Limbaugh stuck his foot in his mouth over the latest issue, some minor issues began again, but we headed them off at the pass also and we have had no loss in business. You see, the problem with your radio protests is that you don’t shop or use those businesses services anyway. You just make noise. Most local advertisers are not backing down. I know this because we were hoping that an advertiser with a weak spine would drop from Limbaugh’s show so we could get another spot in the rotation during his show. Hasn’t happened yet. But we are on a waiting list. Just for the record, as part of the package, we did have time bought during the Ed Schultz show also. The radio station he was on dropped the program a few weeks ago because of low ratings, and his program did not bring in any customers anyway. But know that it’s the people that actually “drive those pickup trucks” as Bill Maher wrote that actually work for a living and spend their money and listen to conservative talk radio. So we are sticking to our guns and not dropping any advertising as long as it continues to build sales. We will let the market decide our advertising, not any political groups and we will prosecute anyone who tries to infringe on our right to do so.

  104. Patrick

Do you even read what you write? You’re telling me to do my homework? Thats rich coming from the one who made all the accusations. I never even mentioned Ed Schultz or Louis CK because I’ve never heard them speak and I don’t even know who they are or what they do. I CLEARLY only spoke about Bill Maher because I’ve been watching his shows for years. I’ve seen him live twice. And in all that time I’ve never ever heard him use the “C” word which is what YOU claimed. So in essence I’ve been doing “my homework” for years. You’re the one who did the accusing so its up to you to prove those accusations. Cite the site Patrick, that’s all I ask. Offer some kind of proof on a video tape from say YouTube. Its not my job to do any homework because I’M NOT THE ONE who accused someone of saying something. got it?

Seriously, my opinion of your intelligence is dropping again, you just cant seem to sustain a consistent level of sane remarks. Zero credibility Patrick…….zero credibility.

  105. JD, I haven’t accused Bill Maher of doing anything. I don’t have too. The videos, the news reports and the interviews with Bill Maher when he defends what he said is there for anyone to views. In the interview, Bill Maher acknowledged it what he said and arrogantly defends it.

Posting facts about what he did is hardly the same thing as accusing someone of something that is debatable. This is not debatable.

You choose to defend a misogynist. I find this repulsive. I choose to criticize that same misogynist.

I have a mother, a wife, a sister with a woman partner who I care about, two sister-in-laws, and many female relatives and friends that range from an unborn woman to one who is 94 years old. I will never sit back quietly to listen to Bill Maher, Ed Schultz, Louis CK or Rush Limbaugh go this route. At least Rush Limbaugh and Ed Schultz apologized. I don’t expect Bill Maher or Louis CK to do so any time soon.

Since you seem hell bent on defending Bill Maher, a guy who degrades women on multiple occasions, I am pleased that you have a low opinion of my intelligence and credibility. I assure you, the feeling is mutual.

Lastly, this entire issue is precisely why both Democrats and Republicans, both liberals and conservatives, both men and women, need to prioritize our national pride as Americans over political bickering when it comes to issues of decency and morality like this. i am the last person to criticize someone for their freedom to make personal choices, but when someone makes statements that hurts others, its still their right to do so, but its not only my right to cal them out, I believe its my obligation to defend those under attack, whether it be Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin, for example. Both are intelligent, good women who are above low lifes like Bill Maher.

  106. For all the Dittoheads who chimed in (and continue to do so), thank you so much for making the case for us that there is, indeed, a clear distinction between Rush fans (and those who capitalize on his hate mongering) and those who take offense at same.

Lest you think this is only about his misogyny, nevermind how often his racism factors into the conversation, consider this:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/03/06/1071637/-Just-guess-who-said-it-Obama-Talks-honky-around-white-people-

“Barack Obama getting in touch with his inner-Reverend Wright. Even talks honky around white people, you know what I mean by that certainly, you might have to explain it to Rachel, who is as white bread as anybody I know. But he talks honky.”

With all due respect, you have the right to believe whatever foul, inhuman, anti-Christian, misanthropic crap you like. You’re free to spend your money where you like. You’re free to boost your income by supporting this lying panderer to misanthropy, ignorance, outright stupidity, and overt malice.

The rest of us are free to view you through lenses ranging from pity to contempt.

And oldbiker1, as for the pickup drivers who actually work for a living, wanna know why I’m not posting damned near 24/7 about this and other issues dear to me and other people from both sides of the political coin that actually love the idea of a unified America as envisioned by the framers of our Constitution (since the original states righters’ vade mecum, the Articles of Confederation, failed so abyssmally)? Because at least 5 days a week I hop into my F150, drive to my strictly blue collar job, and spend a minimum of 8 hours clambering all over (and into) farm equipment, wearing protective gear, lugging equipment, and covering myself head-to-toe with everything from barley chaff to muddy grease to steaming pig shit. I spend my paychecks on keeping the bills current as well as supporting local merchants such as mechanics, parts and hardware stores, and the local grocer.

There’s a solution to being stuck with conservative talk radio for the likes of me. It’s called the aux port on my CD player in my truck. Failing that, I’m comfortable with the sound of the inside of my own head since I actually know how to think for myself and don’t need the likes of Rush to do it for me.

So get off your apologist high-horse, eh? The right has by no means cornered the market on labor (a typically left-leaning force, after all). Next tiime one of your pickup-driving customers shows their love for your hatred-endorsements and for Rush Limbaugh, ask them how much they like their almost-American made union-built truck (assuming they’re not driving Nissans and Toyotas). Ask how much more they’d love their truck if it were built by non-union labor making piss-poor wages and getting crap benefits. That kind of motivation could only lead to the best, safest product for you and your loved ones, right?

Oh, and how was your workday?

Like I said, cite the site. Just because you claim to have done you’re homework and you yourself defend Rush Limbaugh the man who as everybody knows called Sandra Fluke a slut, doesn’t mean you did. You’ve proven again and again that you’re untrustworthy.

You never even addressed the fact that first you said Rush was right…you jumped right on the Rush bankwagon with your disgusting demoralization of Fluke .then later in another post you said you never agreed with Rush….this is exactly why you have ZERO CREDIBILITY you keep changing your statements I’m so tired of your lies I couldn’t even get through your last post……Yawn….

It appears you’ve got nothing so you keep repeating “I’ve done my homework” Ohhhh ok and I should believe you because? You’ve set such an exemplary record so far of honesty and integrity?? Yes….. well I’ve had my laugh for the day and thanks for that.

Do you think if you say something enough times people will believe it? That might be doable in your world but not mine. Cite the site and if you can’t then I’m done listening to your drivel.

  108. I just uninstalled Carbonite. My subscription ends in a few days. You are right David Friend is a weasel, but not for your reasons. He caved in to a bunch of leftist idiots who never used Carbonite in the 1st place and alienated a large crowd who actually paid for service.

The idiocy of the left never ceases to amaze me. Oh and so much for getting Rush Limbaugh off the air. HA HA HA HA HA HA!

  109. David Friend: I suggest that you simply tell the public you’re putting your advertising dollars wherever the customers are. Anything less is not living up to the trust given you by your stockholders. If your [potential] customers are listening to Rush, that’s where you need your advertising. If you can’t do that, please resign & let the next CEO fix the problem. That’s your fiduciary duty….. Frank Dallas

  110. Friend is a phony; a political tool.
ed schultz called Laura Ingraham a slut and he kept advertising ed’s radio show.
If Friend’s reaction was genuine and not political I’d feel differently for his financial loss, but it isn’t/wasn’t genuine and he deserves the consequences.
